The Best Ways to Prepare Wild Game For Dinner

Wednesday, August 10, 2011

While hunting is itself a popular sport enjoyed by hunters all over the world, the premise upon which most hunting is based is a need for food and sustenance. For that reason many avid hunters will agree with the idea that the experience of the hunt is not complete until the game that is killed has been cooked into a delicious meal and shared with others. But cooking wild game such as boar, deer, alligator, rabbit, or any of the other various kinds of hunted animals is not such a common practice in today's modern culinary world. To learn how to properly prepare wild game and to do so safely while also ensuring that the outcome is a tasty success is an art and craft all to itself. Learn a little bit about cooking game and soon it becomes not only easier but much more satisfying and rewarding - both for the hunter and for the cook. Sometimes the hunter and the cook are the same person, and if you are a sportsman who likes to hunt then you should by all means consider learning to cook so that when you return to camp or home with game you can put on your chef's hat and cook what you killed.

As with any kind of cooking, it is always best to follow a recipe. There are many excellent books available that specialize in the cooking of wild game, and the best cookbook authors will also include sections in conventional recipe books that address the nuances and special techniques for cooking hunted game. For example, in the classic American cookbook "Joy of Cooking" you will find many pages devoted to helping explain all about the cleaning, butchering, preparing, and cooking of game. Look in the best cookbooks - those that have encyclopedic entries about the culinary arts - and you will likely discover recipes for deer meat or venison, rabbit, and various game birds like pheasant, quail, turkey, and duck. If the books are older and were written back when hunting for daily food was more common - or if they are special cookbooks designed for hunters - you will find much more exotic types of recipes. You are likely to find out how to cook squirrel, raccoon, beaver tail, wild boar, elk, gator, rattlesnake, and a host of other animals.

Most recipes call for grilling, baking, or roasting. Slowly smoking game meat adds a delightfully earthy and juicy flavor that enhances the taste of wild game. Grilling over an open flame - or over a campfire - is one of the most enjoyable game cooking methods, and it is also possible to make a meat loaf, burger, or other dish - just as you might with a fine cut of prime steak. You can also create dried jerky from venison and other meats, and many hunters dry their own jerky and then pack it along for snacks while on their hunting expeditions.

The best recipe really depends upon the particular type of game you like to hunt and your own personal preferences for what kinds of dishes and foods you enjoy the most. Do some research and shop for cookbooks that are written especially for game hunters. Then experiment with a few ways to cook the game you hunt until you have your own repertoire of personal favorite recipes.

16 Different Ways to Prepare Eggs

Saturday, March 12, 2011

The most used ingredient in our home has to be the egg. Thank goodness these things are considered good for you otherwise we would be in a heap of trouble. I am going to list some of the ways we use eggs in our every day meal plan.

Fried sunny side up. If I ever break a yolk when making eggs this way, I end up eating them, over easy to keep the disappointment to a minimum. Fried over easy or hard. I have learned to like my eggs this way from breaking egg yolks. My kids like their yolks hard. Stir fried. They don't know it but I put eggs right into my Asian stir fry. Scrambled whites mixed with baking powder. We did this when we were on the low carb diet. Scrambled with milk. You can not beat milk if you are adding cheese to your eggs. I like to use 1oz per egg. Scrambled with sour cream. I saw this on a food show and had to try it. Poached soft and hard the adults like the eggs poached soft, the kids like the yolk hard. Hard boiled for salads. When I want protein in my salad I use hard boiled eggs that I slice thin. Hard boiled and deviled. Once a year they get deviled. Hard Boils for egg salad. I could eat egg salad sandwiches every day. Yokes for Caesar salad dressing. The best dressing does not come in a jar. You know what I mean if you make your own already. Pancakes, My daughter likes her pancakes with double eggs so that is how we all eat them. Waffles, no point messing with success so we use a lot of eggs in waffles too. Meat loaf, all great meat loaf has egg in it. Hamburger patties. I was once told that if you use bread crumbs to keep your hamburger patties together then it is meat loaf. Egg is a great binding agent to keep it all together. Baked in a quiche. A baked quiche full of meat is an awesome way to start the day or end a day!

Meat Loaf

Some of the ways we use eggs comes from not wanting to waste anything. When I learned how to make Caesar Salad I had to do something with the egg whites. Adding the to scrambled was a great way to use them, so was putting the into a stir fry. This list is the top 16 ways we use eggs in our house, I am sure you list is different from mine.

Two Tasty Dishes You Can Prepare That Make the Most of Beef

Tuesday, January 25, 2011

Often we only think of poultry and pork when we want to cook cheap and nutritious meals, but if we are honest, we still crave the flavour that beef alone can offer.

Most of us lack imagination when thinking of ways to cook the beef, we mostly stick with the boring and well-known methods, meat loaf, hamburgers, meat balls, tacos and burritos.

Meat Loaf

But wait, have you ever thought of creating a salad featuring beef? There are a surprising number of wonderful recipes available that you can make with beef.

Here are two that have been created recently that your whole family are sure to savour.

Spring Beef Salad

You will need:
1 pound of ground beef
1 head of leaf green lettuce
1 head of red leaf lettuce
1/4 pound of fresh spinach
1-3 green onions
1-2 carrots
1-2 stalks of celery
1 tablespoon of fish oil
1/2 teaspoon of ginger
1/2 teaspoon soy sauce
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/4 cup rice wine vinegar
1/4 cup water
1 teaspoon parsely
1 teaspoon tarragon
1 teaspoon of reserved green onion

Directions: In a pan, brown your ground beef, while you are browning the beef add in, fish oil, ginger, soy sauce, garlic powder, salt and pepper.

In a large bowl, rip up your lettuce leaves and spinach. Chop up carrots and celery to your size liking. Then chop up the green onions into small pieces reserving 1 teaspoon for your dressing.

In a small bowl, mix together rice wine vinegar, water, tarragon, parsely and reserved green onion, set in the fridge to chill for approximately 15 minutes.

When the ground beef is done, drain off any fat that may have come out of the beef, now put into the bowl with your salad greens. Mix together. Take the dressing you created and pour all over the top of your salad, toss some more.

Your salad is ready to serve. This is a great spring or summer salad.

Beef vegetable soup with barley

This is a nice hearty soup that is great to eat any time. You could even set this up to cook in your slow cooker for the day.

You will need:
1 pound of ground beef
1 cup chopped carrots
1 cup chopped celery
1 cup chopped yellow onion
1 cup peas
1 cup corn
1 cup lima beans
1 cup chopped potatoes
1 1/2 cup barley
2 cups beef stock
4-6 cups water
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon basil
1 teaspoon oregano
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon black pepper

Directions:
In a large pan, begin by browning your ground beef, sprinkle a small amount of salt and pepper while meat is cooking. When the meat is browning, add in the onion, let cook for a minute or two, this will allow some of the oils to sweat from the onion and provide additional flavor to the beef and the soup. Now toss in remaining vegetables, allow to good mixing constantly for about 10 minutes, this will help the softening process on the vegetables and also release additional flavors for your soup. Add in the stock, water and spices, cover with a lid let cook on medium heat for about an hour, checking occasionally to make sure it doesn't boil over. Then lower to simmer for about 30-40 minutes. Your soup is ready to serve.

If you prefer not to use ground beef for these recipes you can used chopped up beef of your liking. Just remember to to brown the meat before any of the other steps.

Don't forget, there are a wide variety of different cuts of beef - also quality types of beef, like Aberdeen Angus - so if you are confused over which cuts of beef to use, ask your butcher, they are usually all to happy to offer you advice. You can find many delectable beef recipes by using the the internet - there are plenty of free recipe collections up there, almost all of them will have a collection of recipes for beef. If they don't have a specialist beef recipe section, you will probably find them in the meat recipes category.

Throw an Election Party to Prepare for the Upcoming Midterms

Monday, January 17, 2011

November is fast approaching and that means a very important event is coming up - the midterm elections! Not everyone may be following the current political discourse, but it can't hurt to throw a festive party to celebrate politics and our nation.

Whether you're a Democrat or Republican there are plenty of decorations for either party and you will have no problem finding items to help make it the perfect shindig. Start by sending out some amazing party invitations that are covered in the American flag. It is your patriotic duty to celebrate out nations' colors on the perfect piece of stationary. The red, white and blue are symbolic of our freedom, and your party-goers will surely get excited once they see the amazing invitations.

Hang a large personalized banner, or two, in your home with your favorite candidate's name and campaign slogan emblazoned on it. You can make your venue feel like your very own campaign headquarters as you catch up on the election day tally and see if your man (or woman) is ahead in their race. Don't be afraid to hang red, white and blue donkeys or elephants as well, as the two animals represent out two major political parties in this country.

Of course, like you've done with your invitations, hang the American flag in as many places as possible around your home. You can never have too many flags flying in honor of election day. Stock up on balloons and streamers in the colors as well, and hang them in intricate patterns along the ceiling and walls to create a festive atmosphere.

It will most likely be a long evening while watching the election returns come in so it would be best to feed your guests. Try setting up a buffet style selection of American classics like hot dogs, hamburgers and meat loaf. For dessert set out some homemade apple pie and a variety of cookies like chocolate chip and sugar cookies with red, white and blue frosting. Since you'll be serving such delicious items make sure to have paper goods on hand so that your guests don't have to eat out of their hands. Paper plates, napkins, cups and party tableware in red, white and blue fit perfectly with the theme and help keep everything neat and organized.

The midterm elections take place November 2, so you have about a month to plan and execute the perfect election party. It is an exciting time in our current political climate, so what better way to celebrate than to gather your friends and have a lively, but civil, discussion regarding different political positions while relaxing and enjoying some great food and awesome company.

How to Plan and Prepare Interesting Meals

Saturday, January 1, 2011

When planning meals, whether for your family or for expected guests, you should always make them "interesting". For example, you can plan a colorful meal that is always appetizing than a dull one. Most foods start out looking bright and colorful. You can keep them that way if you follow some general rules in meal preparation.

To add interest to the meals you are preparing, try to use the following principles:

Meat Loaf

1) Choose foods that make attractive color combinations. If the food itself has little color, plan to add a garnish such as parsley, lemon, or spiced apple slices.

2) Avoid repetition of flavors in a meal. For example, try to avoid serving tomatoes as soup, salad, and sauce all in the same meal; or apples in the form of a beverage, salad, and pie in a single meal.

3) Select flavors that blend. Some favorite go-togethers are roast pork and apples, turkey and cranberries, and lamb and mint jelly. Serve mild (or bland) foods with highly seasoned or strong-flavored foods. For example, bland spaghetti goes well with a highly seasoned sauce.

4) Avoid repetition of shapes in the foods served in a meal. For instance, meat balls, boiled potatoes, and whole buttered beets are all ball-shaped. Meat balls, mashed potatoes, and buttered shoestring beets provide varied shapes and more interest in the same meal.

5) Contrast the texture of foods served together. A meal is more interesting if some foods are soft and others are crunchy. For instance, crisp cookies are a favorite with ice cream. On a vegetable plate, a raw vegetable might be served as contrast in texture to soft, cooked vegetables.

6) Use more than one preparation method for each meal. For instance, add a crisp, fresh salad to an oven meal made up of meat loaf, baked potatoes, scalloped tomatoes, and apple pie. Avoid serving a meal in which all the foods have been fried or all have been creamed.

7) Provide variety in the temperatures of the foods served. The hot oven meal would be improved in this respect by the addition of cold salad and ice cream on the pie. Except in very hot weather, an all-cold meal has more appeal when served with a hot beverage such as cocoa, coffee, or hot soup.

8) In planning meals for guests, avoid foods or food combinations with strong, unusual flavors. Unless you know your guests' preferences, it is best to serve foods that are liked by most people.

It takes some amount of patience, precision movements, and timing to prepare an interesting meal. Your success will come easily with a good plan, good equipment, and enough practice.
