How Long Do You Cook a Turkey Meatloaf?

Friday, September 2, 2011

Turkey is a most versatile product. It is more flavorsome and meatier than chicken and with more protein. Like all poultry though there are serious health risks if it is not cooked properly.

Meatloaf in all its forms is great in sandwiches, on a picnic, for dinner or as a hearty lunch. The one thing you have to be careful of when cooking any type of poultry is to make sure it is seasoned well because I have found all various forms of poultry tend to need extra seasoning as opposed to meats like pork and lamb.

Turkey Meatloaf Cooking Times

Cooking time depends on quantity but as a rule I would cook 5lbs of ground turkey in a loaf pan at 325F for about 1 to 1 ½ hours, until the internal temperature is 165F and the meatloaf is cooked through.

The cooking time I provide is for a favored meatloaf recipe of mine. It encompasses the rule of seasoning, that every bite of a meatloaf should be filled with flavor. What I do is sauté 3 cups of onions and 6 cloves of garlic in extra virgin olive oil until translucent, stirring so the onions do not blacken. Add all-purpose seasoning (4teaspoons), pepper (1tsp), thyme (2tsp), tomato paste (2tsp), Worcestershire sauce (1/4 cup) and turkey stock (3/4 cup) to the pan and allow to cool until room temperature.

Combine onion mixture and turkey (5lbs), breadcrumbs (1 ½ cups) and beaten eggs (3) into a large bowl. Mix well and add to a loaf pan. Some spread ketchup (3/4 cup), mustard or catsup atop the meatloaf. I do not.. Cover with aluminum foil and cook at 325F for 1 ½ hours until meatloaf is 160F internally.

If you do not have a loaf pan you can spread the meatloaf on a baking sheet to about the size of a thick burger. I would cover and cook at 325 for 50-65 minutes until internally it is 160F, checking it every 20 minutes to make sure it is not burning.

Tip: Meatloaf is just glorified meatballs so you can use this mixture to make turkey meatballs or even turkey burgers.

Dog food turkey recipes are a great way to give your dog a great treat and keep him healthy too. If you are looking for some great recipes, the best place to search is online. With the recent scare of poisoning in store bought dog foods and treats, more and more people are searching for a safer way to feed their dogs without spending an arm and a leg. Making your own dog turkey recipes and treats can give you an option to know exactly what ingredients are in your dog's food, save money, and eat fresh.

The Tasty Turkey Omelet

If you are looking for tasty dog food turkey recipes, look no further than the tasty turkey omelet. You will need a single jumbo egg, two tablespoons of mashed potato, half cup of cooked turkey meat, a half cup of cooked vegetables, and a fourth cup of grated cheese. You are going to add some olive oil to a medium sized pan and heat it up. Whip the egg and the potato together and then spread in the pan. Spread the turkey and veggies onto the egg and potato mix and sprinkle the cheese on top. Cook covered till the egg is completely done and the cheese is melted. Cut into wedges and serve to your pup.

Turkey Balls

Dog food turkey recipes are very popular. None of them will have a candle to this one. Turkey balls are a great way to keep your dog happy and healthy. You will need:

Once the thickened mixture is warm, spoon a few teaspoons onto the circles of dough, fold up the sides, and pinch them shut. Carefully roll each one into a ball shape. Sprinkle each ball with the cheese and sesame seeds. Arrange the balls on a greased cookie sheet and bake at 375 degrees for about 15 minutes or golden brown. Allow the balls to cool and then serve. Make sure to refrigerate or freeze any leftovers.

How Long Do You Cook Turkey Breast?

Saturday, July 9, 2011

I have been cooking turkey for nigh on 20 years and how long do you cook turkey breast is one of the most often asked questions. For such a beloved meat turkey is seldom cooked right by the masses. Usually population overcook turkey breast and it turns out dry and hard, fit only for the house pet.

That is part of the presuppose I learned to cook, I was fed up with complaining year in and year out about how dry the turkey was!

Meat Loaf

So how long do you cook turkey breast? It depends on the weight of the turkey and if the turkey has been boned. The other factor to think is if the turkey is fresh or frozen.

The attractiveness and annoyance of cooking is that it is not an exact science because we all use distinct kitchen equipment.

Traditional cooking will tell you to cook the bird based on weight, 20-30 minutes per pound at 325 Fahrenheit is the usual advice. This is fine if your turkey breast is thawed or fresh.

The best way to have a moist turkey and to ensure it is properly cooked is to use a thermometer. Once the internal climatic characteristic is 170 Fahrenheit the turkey breast will be ready to eat and moist. If you don't possess a thermometer then the 20-30 minutes rule still applies.

Use a shallow roasting pan if you can, they allow the turkey to cook more evenly. I like to add herbs, water, a quartered onion, celery and carrots to the pan to stop it drying and to generate a flavoursome base for a gravy.

If the breast is stuffed then the cooking time is 30-40 minutes per pound.

An Alternative to Pan Cooking.

I like to slow cook most of my meats to ensure the herbs and spices I use have time to work their way into the meat. Slow cooking means using a very low heat and cooking for several hours. The turkey breast is moist and juicy every time.

Rub seasoning under the skin of the meat (garlic salt, sage, thyme and all purpose seasoning) and put in a slow cooker with chopped carrots, celery, a whole onion (peeled) and a can of cream of chicken soup (good quality).

Leave for 6-8 hours or until internal climatic characteristic is 195. Turn off, take off turkey and leave for 10-15 minutes before carving and serving with the sauce (discard veggies) and mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli.

The perfect turkey breast should have juicy white meat, meaning it is firm yet moist. When it hits your mouth it should have an roughly spongy juiciness. If you overcook it you will know. It will taste like you're trying to chew week-old gum!

Great Main policy Meat Alternatives to a Thanksgiving Turkey

Tuesday, July 5, 2011

It's practically time to celebrate Thanksgiving Day again. Most of us will sit down and enjoy the traditional turkey supper with all the trimmings. There are a lot of habitancy who might want to try something a exiguous bit different this year. Here's a combine ideas for your Thanksgiving meal.

Standing Rib Roast

Meat Loaf

A standing rib roast is a cut of beef from the rib section where rib-eye steaks are generally cut from. A lot of my customers know this singular cut as "Prime Rib". It's called a "Standing Rib Roast" because it includes up to seven rib bones and is most generally cooked in a "standing" position. To ensure you have sufficient to go around, I recommend a serving size of two habitancy per rib, with a minimum size of three ribs. Anyone less than that is basically a nice thick steak.

Thanksgiving Ham

Some of my customers love having ham for the holidays. You can buy hams either boneless or with the bone-in. As third a generation butcher, I all the time recommend bone-in hams because they supply more flavor and the bone can be used to make soup or even ham and beans. You'll want to have about one pound of boneless ham per every three to four habitancy or one pound of bone-in ham for every two to three habitancy or at your Thanksgiving meal.

Crown Roast of Pork

A crown roast of pork can capture the spirit of any holiday since it can be decorated to match any occasion. A crown roast comes from the rib section of the pork loin. It is called a crown roast because a butcher will take two rib racks and bend them into a circle. The sections are tied together to generate a crown effect. Bones are left in this roast to add to the flavor and moistness of the roast. Plus, it adds to the presentation.

I recommend 1 rib bone per person or about ¾ of a pound per person. Most Crown Pork Roasts roast will serve about eight to ten people. Ask us to tie a smaller roast if you are serving fewer people.

Boneless Beef Rump Roast

A boneless beef rump roast is cut from above the back end of the hipbone. generally this boneless roast is rolled and tied. A rump roast that contains the bone is known as a standing rump roast. I recommend a boneless rump roast since it is easier to carve. This is leading when hosting a lot of guests at a Thanksgiving Feast. Rump roasts are very flavorful and are all the time a hit. generally you want to about one pound of boneless roast per every two to three habitancy at your meal.

Duck

Roasting a duck for a Thanksgiving feast is an excellent alternative to turkey. Duck meat is darker and ordinarily more moist than meat from a turkey. Just remember, ducks are also a lot smaller. I tell my customers to roast one duck for every 2-3 people. This ensures that everyone has sufficient to eat.

Italian Thanksgiving

How about an Italian Thanksgiving? Columbus did scrutinize (or re-discovered to be politically correct) the Americas. For those who want an Italian theme to their Thanksgiving feast you can add an Italian Roll. Italian Rolls are made from a thin cut round steak. Add a layer of mild or spicy Italian sausage to the round steak and roll it. This makes for a very flavorful increasing to your Thanksgiving feast.

Steaks

Who doesn't love a great steak? There's rib-eye's, t-bones, porterhouses, and of course filet mignons. everyone has their beloved cut steak and any of these steaks are the excellent increasing to a Thanksgiving meal. As your local butcher to institution cut your Thanksgiving steaks to your specification.

Many habitancy will stay with the traditional turkey for Thanksgiving meal while others will skip turkey altogether. Not sure if you're ready to skip out on Turkey this Thanksgiving? Stick with tradition, but serve an alternative with your turkey. It may be the start of a new Thanksgiving Tradition. Anyone your choice, enjoy the holiday.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Creamy Mushroom Crepes With Turkey and Swiss Cheese

Saturday, May 28, 2011

After living with us for a few years, our teenage grandchildren went off to college. Though the twins come home once in a while, my husband and I are basically empty-nesters. This means we have lots of leftovers. Food can get pushed to the back of the refrigerator and stay there for weeks, so I check my leftovers periodically.

I'm amazed at what I find. Sometimes it's a cup of peas or spinach or carrots. Leftovers can include a little chicken, turkey, or ham. Since we paid for this food, we don't want it to go to waste, and I'm on constant alert for ways to use leftovers.

Meat Loaf

Yes, I've done the obvious and made vegetable soup. I've combined vegetables, made casseroles, and have even made meat loaf pizza, not one of my best decisions. But I had forgotten about crepes, a type of pancake that can be turned into an entree or a fabulous dessert like Crepes Suzette. Today is one of those days when I couldn't think of a anything to make for dinner. Clearly, it was time to check the leftovers.

In the vegetable bin I found an unopened box of sliced mushrooms. There was half a package of scallions and part of the turkey breast we had last evening. I decided to combine these ingredients and make a casserole for dinner tonight and two additional lunches.

You may use other types of mushrooms for this recipe. Substitute chopped onions if you don't have any scallions. I made my own crepes, but you can buy ready-made ones at the grocery store. The sauce is made with a new product, cooking cream, which is cream cheese for sauces. You may use regular cream cheese, light, or fat-free for the sauce.

Your cooking technique can be the difference between successful crepes and a disaster. For best results, let the batter rest for at least an hour. Chicken or cooked salmon may be substituted for the turkey. I hope you enjoy my original recipe.

Ingredients

2 tablespoons extra light olive oil 8-ounce box cleaned and sliced button mushrooms 3 green onions, chopped (white and green parts) 1/2 teaspoon thyme 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder (more if you love garlic) 1 1/2 cups cooked turkey, cut into small cubes 10-ounce carton cooking creme, original flavor 8 cooked crepes 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese (more if you wish)

Method

Pour olive oil into skillet. Add mushrooms and green onions. Cook over medium heat until mushrooms start to brown. Remove skillet and turn off burner. Stir in thyme, garlic powder, cubed turkey, and cooking cream. Put skillet back on warm burner and stir for a minute to melt the cream cheese. Coat an oven-proof baking dish with cooking spray. Place a spoon of mushroom mixture in the center of each pancake and roll tightly. Set in baking dish, seam side down. Sprinkle Swiss cheese over entire casserole. Bake in a 400-degree oven for about 20 minutes, or until the cheese has melted and the casserole edges start to brown. Serve with a vegetable and a green salad. Makes 8 servings.

Meatloaf isn't always made with the traditional ground beef, it can also be made with low fat ground turkey meat, which cuts down on the calories and the fat. Ground turkey is very versatile and blends well with a variety of spices and vegetables.

This particular turkey meatloaf is packed with onions, mushrooms, broccoli, carrots and green peppers. It's held together with quick cooking oats and includes seasonings like garlic, poultry seasoning and soy sauce. This loaf can be the centerpiece of any hearty meal.

Meat Loaf

Here's how to make this meatloaf:

1 cup of diced yellow onion, 4 ounces of mushrooms that have been chopped, 1 cup of diced broccoli florets, 1/2 cup of diced green bell pepper, 1 cup of grated carrots, 1/4 cup of chopped fresh parsley, 1 garlic clove that's been minced, 1-1/4 pounds of ground turkey, 3/4 cup of quick cooking oats, 1/4 cup of ketchup, 2 tablespoons of soy sauce, 1 large egg, lightly beaten, 1 teaspoon of poultry seasoning, 3/4 teaspoon of salt, 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper and 1 cup of canned cranberry sauce, drained and sitting at room temperature.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare a 9x5-inch loaf pan with cooking spray.

In a medium saucepan, cook, over medium heat, the onions, mushrooms, broccoli, bell pepper and the carrots in salted water. Bring to a boil and cook for an additional 2 minutes. Drain the water from the pan. Transfer the vegetables to a large bowl.

In a large bowl, combine the cooked vegetables, parsley, garlic, ground turkey, quick cooking oats, ketchup, soy sauce, egg, poultry seasoning, salt and pepper.

Place the meatloaf mixture into the prepared pan and press down gently. Bake for 1 hour or until the loaf is nice and firm, and a light brown color. Remove from oven and let it sit for up to 10 minutes.

Transfer the meatloaf to a serving platter and serve with the cranberry sauce.
