Feeding a Fussy Dog

Monday, February 28, 2011

When we "adopted" our latest dog, Hamish, he was about 6 years old, and had already gone through at least 3 homes that we know of, and perhaps more . He was originally a rescue dog from the RSPCA, and was found living wild in a cemetery.

Now Hamish is a very small dog (6Kg), so he had to have his wits about him to survive in such an unforgiving place. Needless to say he had a little bit of a wild streak in him, and he was very distrustful about food.

Meat Loaf

When we first got him home, he insisted on sniffing all food, and would not eat in front of us. When we put his food down, we would hold some out for him to sniff, but he'd sniff it then walk away. However we often found that the food was gone by next morning.

The problem is that we also have a cat, who is fed nearby, and at dinner we feed them the same food (raw chicken necks, raw chicken wings, meat, etc). So we had to be sure that it wasn't just our 6.5 Kg cat stealing his food!

He also wouldn't eat cooked food - and I had always cooked for our previous dogs and they loved it! I'm not sure Hamish had ever seen a vegetable before, and they definitely didn't smell right! Actually, our previous dogs were bull terrier crosses, and they ate anything that didn't move! Their favourite food was what I call "dog porridge", but it actually has meat, lots of vegetables, and just a couple of cups of rolled oats - our boys just couldn't get enough of that. This was a whole new experience for us!

So how did we solve it?

The first thing was to get Hamish into a routine - to expect food at the same time each day. That meant not leaving the food bowls lying around if he didn't eat his food right away.

Straight after our walk in the morning, I would put out a little commercial dog food for Hamish, and cat food for the cat. After 15 or 20 minutes, it was taken away, whether eaten or not. I did however leave out a small bowl of dried biscuits for each of them.

At night, both animals are fed fresh food, and generally the same thing. I feed them around 6:30, just after I have watched the news. And I use the same method. The food goes down, and it is lifted after 15 or 20 minutes, whether eaten or not.

The second thing was to introduce vegetables slowly. I started with a meat loaf, as you can hide grated vegetables in meat loaf pretty well! Then (and I know you're not supposed to do this!) I would feed him tidbits of vegetables from my dinner. Of course he loved them, because it wasn't dog food. So slowly we got Hamish to start eating vegetables.

The final thing we did was to buy him a glass (or china) dog food bowl. I know I don't like drinking tea or coffee from a Styrofoam or plastic cup, and I wondered if the plastic food bowls didn't have some smell or taste that sensitive dog noses could pick up. So, he got a proper food bowl.

I'm pleased to say Hamish has now turned into a normal dog, food wise. He eats his food 95% of the time, he even hangs around the kitchen while I'm cooking in case I drop anything on the floor. It's not always worth stealing, but he checks it out anyway, and sometimes whatever is dropped is worth eating!

We all know relatives who can't cook. Not that we are experts in culinary delicacies, but when an inedible concoction hits your plate with a thud, it takes some special manners and facial control to compliment your host.

An in-law of my wife's who has since passed away, mentioned proudly that dumplings would be part of the coming feast at her house. Misshapen, gray lumps of congealed flour and water sank immediately to the bottom of the soup, lying there like raw clay ready for working. Only by dividing these door stops in tiny pieces were they swallowed at all, being quickly sloshed past our taste buds with the wickedest of wines. Unsurprisingly, no-one took seconds.

Meat Loaf

While not strictly a relative, a well-meaning neighbor lady repaid any and all favors done her with a beautifully wrapped dozen of her own home-made cookies. Better named 'conversation stoppers', one cookie could dry out your mouth for fifteen minutes. Only wild pointing at the rest room and effort to smile through powdered lips could save you from decorating the table with a shotgun of wheat pellets. Sneakily taking out the garbage at three in the morning, we had to remember to thank our kindly bakery chefs the next day for their delicious contribution.

One newly-wed couple rendered a barely edible meal of sawdust meat loaf and marblized beans, unfortunately followed by a carrot cake made with still-raw carrots, easily identified in each slice. She apoligised for the slightly burned crust on the meatloaf, but her young husband sincerely complimented her with the statement that it reminded him of his Mom's recipe. A blue gelatin dessert filled a bowl like a country lake with little plastic ducks floating on top. Luckily the extra water in the mix made it possible for the ducks to actually swim.

The other night, my wife (who is a superb cook) miscalculated the cooking time for the ravioli, bringing new meaning the to phrase, al dente. I'm still chewing. On the other hand, some diners have not a kind word for the chef especially when the dishes are undeniably delicious. Even after three helpings and much smacking of lips and uncovered belches, these gourmands have only a 'Menza, menza" or 'It was O.K." to say. Next time I hope they go to MacDonald's.

10 Ways to Use Leftover Meatloaf

Friday, February 25, 2011

Have you ever made meatloaf, and found yourself with enough left overs to last the whole week? If you're like me, I do not enjoy eating the same meal more than twice in a row, once for dinner, then lunch the next day. I discovered that a little meatloaf can go a long way, and that does not mean by sprouting legs from sitting too long in the fridge.

The following is a list of things that can be done so your family will not even recognize the meat loaf from the night before. This list is by no means exhaustive, but it should give you a good start, and may spark your own creativity.

Meat Loaf

1. Whenever you make too much of something, one option is always to divide into individual portion sizes, date, label, and freeze. You can easily grab it out for a quick meal.
2. Easy Chili: Crumble up your leftover meat loaf into a pot. Add a can of kidney beans, rinsed and drained. Add a couple cans of tomato sauce, or your choice of ground or chopped tomatoes with juice (if your tomato base is runny, add a tablespoon of cornmeal). Add a tablespoon of chili powder, half a tablespoon of seasoned salt, and half a tablespoon of brown sugar. Simmer for ½ hour and serve with cheese and sour cream if desired.
3. Shepherd's Pie: Crumble the leftover meat loaf. Stir in a can of cream of mushroom soup and half a can of water or milk. Spread into bottom of casserole dish. Add a layer of your favorite vegetable: if canned just drain and add, if fresh or frozen, cook and drain then add. Top with mashed potatoes and cook on 350 for half an hour.
4. Tater tot casserole: Prepare meat and vegetables like you would for shepherd's pie. On top of the vegetables, put a layer of chopped Velveeta or sliced American cheese. Top with tater tots and cook at 400 for 20-25 min.
5. Chip dip: Mix meat loaf with salsa and Velveeta, or similar cheese. Microwave until cheese is melted. Mix well and serve with tortilla chips.
6. Sloppy Joes: Put meat loaf into a frying pan with ketchup, mustard and barbeque sauce. Simmer for 10-15 minutes on low heat. Serve with pickles on buns.
7. Patty Melts: Slice the meat loaf into medium slices (about burger thickness). On a frying pan or griddle, place a piece of buttered bread, butter side down. Place the meat loaf slice on the bread with a slice of cheese on it. Toast another piece of bread on the griddle for the top. Sauté onion rings and place on the meat loaf and cheese combination. Top with the other piece of bread and serve with desired condiments.
8. Taco Salad: Chop meat loaf in a frying pan and cook on medium heat. Add a package of taco seasoning and amount of water indicated on the package. Simmer for 10-15 minutes. Serve with tortilla chips, lettuce, cheese, sour cream and tomatoes.
9. Spaghetti Sauce: Add crumbled meat loaf to a sauce pan. Add two cans of tomato sauce, ½ tablespoon Italian Seasoning, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Simmer for 15-20 minutes. Serve with your favorite cooked noodles.
10. Biscuits and gravy: Crumble meat loaf into a sauce pan and set to medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons of flour and stir until coated. Add 2 cups of milk and stir until thickened. Add salt and pepper to taste and serve over biscuits.

Egg Whites and Veggies For Dinner? Lose Weight by Cutting Calories With Filling and Satisfying Meals

Tuesday, February 22, 2011

Did you know that our bodies are genetically prone to store excess fat?
Science suggests that this tendency is rooted back to our ancestors who faced a real threat of starvation. Human bodies developed survival mechanisms to store and protect fat to so we would have adequate fuel during a calorie shortage. Obviously, our ancestors did not have the convenience of supermarkets and restaurants that we have today. Our bodies have been programmed to see weight loss as a sign of imminent starvation.

So how are we supposed to burn fat and lose the weight?
It ought to be simple, but when you cut too many calories to lose weight your body senses starvation and will adjust the metabolism to fight this threat. Science and research are proving a far more effective method of losing weight is to "fool" your body by refuel it frequently with small healthy portioned meals that are rich in fiber, nutrients, and protein to build lean muscle mass.

Meat Loaf

How can we make effective dietary adjustments to "fool" our body?
Replace foods high in sugar and carbohydrates with foods rich in fiber, protein and nutrients. This will enable you to feel fuller on less. You can add extra Vitamin C by adding bell peppers, bok choy, cabbage (red or green), cauliflower or broccoli to your diet. By adding any of these veggies to your meal, you boost your immune system and help out your cardiovascular system as well as adrenal functions!

The key is to find ways to fool your body into being well fueled and satisfied but still reducing the calories you take in. One trick that has been adopted by athletes, body builders, and successful dieters is to substitute whole eggs for egg whites. This is one healthy way of cutting calories and still providing a healthy amount of lean protein to provide the energy your body needs to function properly. Here are some of our most satisfying recipes made lighter using egg whites:

Mighty Miso Chicken with Brown Rice

WHAT YOU NEED:
2 tablespoons miso (soybean paste)
1 1/2 tablespoons fresh ginger, minced and peeled
2 cloves garlic, minced

3/4 cup Eggology egg whites
1 cup onion, finely chopped
1 cup carrot, thinly sliced
1 tablespoon fish sauce
2 1/2 cups cooked brown rice
1 cup (about 3 ounces) shiitake mushroom caps, diced
1 tablespoon low-sodium soy sauce
1 1/2 cups chopped spinach

2. Wrap each breast half securely in plastic wrap. Arrange the packets in steamer rack; place rack in a Dutch oven.

4. Place a large nonstick skillet coated with cooking spray over medium-high heat until hot. Add Eggology egg whites, and cook 2 minutes or until done. Remove egg whites from skillet; coarsely chop.

5. Add reserved cooking liquid, chicken, onion, carrot, and fish sauce to Dutch oven, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium; cook 5 minutes or until liquid almost evaporates. Add rice, mushrooms, parsley, green onions, and soy sauce; cook 3 minutes. Stir in egg whites and spinach.

Budget Meals Under 10 Dollars - Flaky Meat Loaf

Sunday, February 20, 2011

My mother was a German emigre from the Frankfurt region of Germany. She came to the United States as a young woman and in quick order had two children and a broken marriage. My mother came from the time after WWII when woman were still judged and selected by their homemaking skills. How is their cooking? Can they keep up the house? Will they be able to manage the household budget? These old-fashioned ideas seem so outer space to most people of today. Circumstances forced my mother to work outside the home all throughout my childhood and young adulthood. She remarried a man that loved her home cooking and he deemed it necessary that we should all sit down to a home cooked meal as often as we could. My mother would get home from work and almost immediately begin to whip up some wonderful dish.

These food creating times always allowed us both to talk about our day and catch up with what was going on in the world. I am sure this is where my love for all manner of food and drink originated. One of my favorite recipes was this economical, simple, and super moist recipe that I named Flaky Meat Loaf due to the corn flakes my mother always used. You can make this recipe for under easily. Most of the ingredients should already be in your refrigerator or pantry. Added bonuses from this recipe are the lean ground beef, low calorie count (240), vegetables, and loads of fiber from the corn flakes.

Meat Loaf

Flaky Meat Loaf   Makes 4 Servings   2 cups corn or bran flakes,   1/2 cup barbeque sauce,  2 egg whites,   3/4 lb. extra lean ground beef,   1 medium yellow onion, chopped ,  1 medium ground pepper, chopped,   1/2 cup shredded carrots

1. Preheat over to 375F. Mix cereal, 1/3 cup of the barbeque sauce and the egg whites in a large bowl until well blended. You have much more fun if you do it by hand!

2. Shape into loaf. Place loaf on a broiler pan lined with aluminum foil. Brush the top & sides with the remaining barbeque sauce.

3. Bake for 1 hour or until the loaf is cooked thoroughly through.

The Right Way to Make Yeast Breads

Saturday, February 19, 2011

Yeast breads can taste very delicious when done right. Here are a few tips to make yeast bread correctly:

1) One of the secrets to making good yeast bread is to use as little flour as possible and still be able to handle the dough. The dough should be quite moist. Adding flour beyond this point will make the dough heavy and tough.

Meat Loaf

2) If your yeast dough springs back constantly while you are trying to roll it out, it needs to relax a bit. Cover it with a dish towel to keep it from drying out and let it rest for about 10 minutes.

3) If your yeast dough doesn't rise, two things to look out for are old yeast (check the expiration date) and the temperature of the liquid. Dissolve fresh compressed yeast in liquids that are not warm.

4) Out of bread crumbs? You can use many kinds of dry cereals as crumbs if you put them through a blender or food processor. They are excellent in meat loaf and hamburger. They are also good added to yeast bread dough.

5) To keep dinner rolls piping hot, wrap a hot ceramic tile in a napkin, and place it in the bottom of the serving basket. Be sure to place the basket on a trivet to protect the table.

6) Stale rolls can be revived if you spray them lightly with cold water, place them in a paper bag or wrap in foil and warm up in an oven for about 5 minutes.

Christmas Traditions to Start With Children - Try Scandinavian Potato Sausage

Friday, February 18, 2011

~~*~~

My Mother-in-Law has a wonderful potato sausage made up at a sausage company nearby where she lives. Lucky her! I know of none where I live that would do this for me. She serves this very Scandinavian Sausage with cranberry sauce. Also on her Christmas holiday table are some other wonderfully flavored items. Presulta, which is a recipe for meat loaf essentially. (That recipe is also posted, find it on my article list on this ezine) Presulta is served cold with white vinegar making it 'very' unique. Traditional Swedish Rice Pudding that is served hot. Swedish Corn Pudding, often a children's favorite, mine when I was growing up anyway. Twenty Four Fruit Salad, which I really cannot say how Scandinavian that is but it sure is yummy. She has alternatives to that salad as well, one is called Easy Twenty Four Hour Salad and the other one is called Easier Twenty Four Hour Salad. Too cutie huh?!

Meat Loaf

I grew up with different things and served my children those things but many of those Christmas traditions to start withe children have fallen to the wayside.

EVERY single Christmas Eve of my whole like I have had Oyster Stew. I always made sure my daughters had just a taste as well to continue on with the tradition. There have been many Christmas' since that we have not been together so since they always hated oyster stew that tradition for them is long gone. Oh well, new ones arise for new days and outlooks.

Here is my Mother-in-Laws recipe for Potato Sausage:

USE EQUAL PORTIONS:

Beef
Pork
Potatoes

Have meat ground together at the butchers. season with salt (1 tsp.) per pound of ingredients) add pepper to taste.

Pack in casings. ( Eww, I know, lets just not go there OK?)

Boil 1/2 hour.

If you can't find casings, ( or simply refuse to go there) you can go ahead and make them into patties and fry them over low heat.

Serve this sausage ( or patties for the squeamish ) hot with cranberry sauce. It is the cranberry sauce that makes the difference here so that is a total must!

These dishes mentioned are obviously not just meant for holidays of course so do try Potato Sausage, I think you will love it.

Am I still eating Oyster Stew every Christmas Eve? Yes indeed I am!

Having a Restaurant in My Home

Thursday, February 17, 2011

Eating and meal planning while sticking to a food budget of 0 a week for a family of four can be pretty challenging. Variety is required you so you do not become bored. I have added another personal challenge to feeding our family.

In the past we would dine out twice a week minimum. When we found something that was extremely tasty I would spare no expense and recreate that flavorful meal at home. I would purchase the highest and most expensive steaks. Shopping at the finest food distributors was always a spectacular experience. Spending - was still considered to be a savings when compared to what we had recently paid for one meal. I have modified how we eat since we began this new grocery budget. Now I am adding a challenge just like they do on the T.V. Show survivor. The challenge I have added is to recreate one of our meals that we would eat at a restaurant. The meal can be from a fast food place or it can be from an up scale restaurant and anything in between. The recreation of a meal is easy enough to do but I also must stay within my 0 a week food budget. This challenge will require some creativity, some foods will have to substituted for less pricey alternatives. Let me give you an example, fillet wrapped in bacon for four people can easily take the whole weekly budget. Substituting fillet with rib eye can maximize the meat while still giving us decent quality.

Naturally the first time we do this we will start with something very simple. In the future we hope to increase the difficulty. My food challenge this weekend is to make the In n Out meal known as combo #1. Normally we eat the 4 double cheese burger meals with onion on three of them. I will give you a list of all the ingredients we purchased at the store and the unit cost as it relates to the making of the meal.

Here is the list of ingredients purchased. 1 pound of hamburger .29, 1 egg .09, head of lettuce .29, Kraft American slice cheese 8 slices .94, 4 store brand hamburger buns .44, tomato .34, onion .61, 2 large potatoes for fries .05, 4 litres of coke products .54.

This meal will be hand made with no short cuts such as purchasing already made patties. Back in the early 1980's I was given an old fashion Tupperware patty maker. I still use it today as I can make up to 8 patties with one pound of ground meat. I always make my patties with one egg per pound of meat. I never use bread crumbs, as one wise chef told me that would make it meat loaf not a hamburger patty. The one thing I have not counted was the sauce on the bun. We put a little mayo and some thousand island dressing. We will estimate this added cost at .25

total cost to make our at home in n out combo #1 for four people came to a grand total of .74. While this is expensive for a single meal on our budget of 0 a week, it was very tasty. The cost of going out to feed the family would have been .

Making this meal at home saved us .26.

Having a Restaurant in My Home

Rick and his wife have been able to reduce their grocery budget by almost 50% since they started this challenge of feeding a family of four for 0 a week in 2010. They have now included creating restaurant meals into the challenge without changing their budget. We will put the challenge under the title My Kitchen You can make suggestions for your favorite meal at their blog http://feed4forunder100week.blogspot.com/

Get Paid For Your Recipes

Wednesday, February 16, 2011

The golden age of cookbooks seems to be gone with the gale force winds of the Internet, with an overwhelming number of web sites today offering massive volumes of quality recipes to their visitors for free, many if not most of which are submitted by eager cooks for no compensation at all, so people so enthusiastic about their passion for life in the kitchen that they're happy enough to see their name online with credit.

So, unless you're an established food critic or columnist, a celebrity with your own cookbook, or the next Rachel Ray, your chances today of chances of getting paid for recipes are miniscule and continue to diminish every day. With 60 million plus search engine results for phrases like "send us your recipes," recipes seem to be LESS than a dime a dozen.

Meat Loaf

There are however quite a few sites around that tell you supposedly how to get paid for your recipes, but the ones we've seen usually pay a miniscule amount based on the number of page views over time, that is, how many people visit your recipe page from a search engine link, as the site tries to make money on advertising. The competition for success via this methodology is intense, and while some people seem to have the knack for it, this humble opinion is very simple:

"Don't quit your day job." People are just so eager to get what they call "published," they're willing to give it away for free, which to the serious writer with an interest and expertise in food, can knock you out of the box before you even start.

I'm passionate about slaving away in front of a hot stove, but I haven't bought a cookbook in 15 years I guess. Why bother? When I need a recipe i just go to my good old galley slave Google, type in the name of the dish I'm interested in followed by the word recipe, and THERE'S my cookbook, sorry to say. And I don't feel the least bit guilty about it. I don't even print them out anymore either. The computer desk is just seven feet from the stovetop in the next room and I can work while I eye things for boiling over through the doorway.

The best way to get your foot in the door in my opinion is to focus more on broader subjects than just single recipes, that is, instead of peddling just your Great Aunt Betty's Secret Meat Loaf recipe, write an article on ground beef, which covers its history and growth in popularity, when the first true hamburger appeared and who it is credited to, then slip in dear old Betty's concoction in there, possibly with a couple others. Now that's saleable in an articles market.

Let me know how you do. Right now I'm curious about the hamburger guy and I'm gonna go Google it.

Baked Salmon Patties

Monday, February 14, 2011

For years fish has been labeled "brain food" and more recently nutritionists have added "rich in Omega3" and "heart healthy" to the labels. It's all true! Fish is a good source of protein, selenium, phosphorus, magnesium, vitamin B6, and Omega3 oils. The benefits of eating fish, in particular baked or broiled salmon, three times per week include lowering: the risk of heart disease, blood pressure, macular degeneration, ADHD in children, grumpy teenage syndrome, dementia in seniors, and a whole host of other ailments and diseases. A recent Purdue University study found that nearly 30% of the Americans studied have un-measureable levels of omega3 fatty acids in their systems, placing them at greater risk for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, dementia, behavioral and learning problems.

So listen up folks! Adults and children need to eat fish every week. If you think you don't like fish, start off with fish sticks or fish burgers until you develop a taste for it, then move on to tuna sandwiches, baked and broiled salmon, halibut, and next thing you know the world will be your oyster.

Ground Beef Recipes - How to Choose the Best Meat

Sunday, February 13, 2011

The meaning of ground beef (otherwise known as minced meat) is chopped fresh or frozen meat from a variety of cuts and clippings. No matter if you refer to it as ground beef or minced meat, it can be put together into a delicious meal for supper. Ground meat is needed for making Hamburgers, Meat Loaf, Tacos, Shepherd's Pie, Lasagna, Chili, along with many other common recipes. It's important to seek out fresh ground beef, which tends to have a vibrant red tint to it.

Oxygen in the environment reacts with pigments in the beef to create a vivid red color which can typically be found on the outside of beef bought from the grocery store. When a container is tagged as ground beef, it indicates that it could be any blend of breast and leg meats, and in some cases even skin.

Meat Loaf

In most places, food regulations outline distinct types of ground meat and what they are allowed to consist of. There are various possible choices for today's meats such as options like 91% to 95% lean meat that fulfill the U.S. government's rules for low fat ground beef. No matter what type you choose, hamburger meat is a perfect component easy and delicious dinners.

For the best result in dishes where beef is the main ingredient, you need to use the freshest ground beef you can find. I really enjoy simple, tasty recipes made out of hamburger meat. I don't know about you, but a meal containing hamburger and potatoes ensures I'll be home for dinner. There really are countless recipes that can be made using hamburger meat. For example, you can probably find as many hamburger casserole dishes as there are chefs. Ground meat is a favorite choice in numerous recipes, ranging from meatloaf to spaghetti sauce to soup.

Ground meat can be purchased in a variety of types nowadays. It is produced with meat taken from one or more of the following: brisket, chuck, shank, flank, and short plate meat cuts. Ground beef can be produced with just about any cut when you grind it at home, or if you request your local butcher to grind it to suit your needs. It is very important to remember that this kind of meat is much more subject to spoiling than other types like steak, so immediate, suitable storage is absolutely necessary.

Simple Strategies for Choosing a Winning Business Name (Plus, How to Avoid the Mistake I Made!)

Friday, February 11, 2011

When it comes to small business success, a name means everything. And coming up with the right name for your business is one of the most important decisions you'll make.

With your future on the line, plan on putting in just as much time and effort into creating a winning business name as you did when developing your business plan or choosing your target market. The right name will help to pique curiosity, attract your ideal customers and form an immediate emotional connection, while the wrong one can leave you and your business faltering.

Meat Loaf

Unfortunately, there's no magic recipe for picking a winning business name. But following the six hints below will definitely point you in the right direction.

1. Keep it short

Although there are always exceptions, the majority of great business names tend to be short, to the point and catchy. Some of the most successful businesses use simple, one-word names! Longer names are usually difficult to say and harder to handle in radio ads, on logos and signage.

If you do decide to go with a longer length, make sure its shortened version, which might be required for its web domain, is acceptable.

Also, keep in mind that people would much rather say, "I'm going to call USAA to update my insurance policy," than "I need to call the United Services Automobile Association." But be careful because even if you don't intend for your name to be shortened, the public will often do it for you. And not all abbreviations will work. ("I'm going to the FBI," has a whole different meaning than grabbing a bite to eat at Frank's Breakfast Inn. smiley) 2. Make it easy to spell, pronounce and remember

Put simply, if they can't easily pronounce your biz name, your customers will avoid saying it! And as a small business owner, you can't afford to miss out on free word-of-mouth advertising.

This is a lesson I've learned from experience.

Make sure the name sits well on your tongue and sounds good to your ear. And then test it out with others. They should be able to easily spell and correctly pronounce the name the first time they hear or see it.

3. Remember the meaning

Before you start thinking of a business name, define the qualities you want your business to be identified with, such as, strong, dependable or affordable. Also think about WHAT you do. The more meaning you put into your business name up front, the less time you'll spend explaining what you do or the value you provide.

For instance, names like Joe's Plumbing, Carol's Interior Design and Smith & Weston Architecture immediately communicate the type of service each of these businesses provide - even to a casual passerby. And when you stop to think about it, many of us end up calling companies are walking into stores simply because the name of the business clearly indicated that they have what we're looking for.

4. Create a positive visual and emotional connection

Generally speaking, when we hear or read something, our brains transmit this into an image. For example, what picture pops into your mind when you read "Bridal Boutique" versus "Dress Barn"? Based on your newly formed mental picture, where would you rather shop? Besides the visual, we also form an emotional connection, either good or bad. So when we see an ad about a day spa with words like "Retreat " or "Relaxation," we not only form a visual but also a connection of peace and tranquility.

5. Make it unique

Keeping in mind hints one through four above, it's also important to make your business name unique. Ensure other companies aren't already using something similar. It might be the difference of a word like having "apparel" instead of "clothing" at the end of a business name or simply having an "s" at the end of the title like, "Sparkle LLC" versus "Sparkles LLC" that makes the difference between two companies. Do your research. There are plenty free online services that allow you to check whether or not a business name is taken.

Also test out your top choices of names on your friends and family. They might surprise you and come up with a connotation that is completely different than what you intended.

6. Make sure you can get the website address

Before you decide on your award-winning business name and concern yourself with the details, make sure you can transfer your name into a website address as early as possible. Your domain name needs to match your business name as closely as possible, giving your potential and current customers one less thing they have to remember.

But what if you can get the domain name you want, only without the.com extension? Is it better to get the name and choose another extension such as, ".net" or ".biz"? Different experts say different things. My advice is to have a.com address as your primary URL, but to buy as many of the closely matched other domains as possible - and have them all point to your website.

If you do choose an alternative, make sure that you advertise your business with the full domain name, otherwise people will assume a ".com" extension and travel to the wrong place or worse yet, to your competitor's page.

At the end of the day, one of the most important factors is whether or not your ideal, targeted customers or clients will like and resonate with your business name. It's even more important than if you like it. So be sure to do your research, test out your choices and choose something that will help you grow your business.

It is I, a Dog

Thursday, February 10, 2011

I was born in the streets of Malibu,
You have perhaps heard that name a couple of times,
They say the world's hottest parties go on out there,
But for me, there was only cold snow.....
As for my appetite, I had to do with some stale meat loaf,
That the local butcher used to throw away from a back door,
That is if I was lucky; otherwise... use your imagination.

Then there was Mat, who tried often to steal that too,
He was a one frail, starved and crazy cat, but it is not in my nature to show mercy,
So I fought it off, often with a few scratches here and there.
It hadn't always been this way; there was Jerry I remember...
There was his cosy bed, there were his many games too,
My friends (I don't know where they are now) were jealous because I lived with Jerry,
Or maybe because I lived in a house that resembled a palace,
They kept me as a 'pet';

Meat Loaf

They called me 'Deutsche': whatever that meant,
But then I got too old, they thought, I wasn't 'fit' any more to be a pet,
"You can always get yourself a new one", Jerry's mom's said,
"These things come and go, this one is too stupid and old for your games now..."
Sure enough, I found myself on the Malibu street: 48B once again,
A place for tattered old buildings, garbage cans and unfortunate selves like myself.

It has been seven years since that winter's night...
I was taking a casual walk along the denser forest road some way off from Malibu,
That was where the six hounds caught me off my guard, and laid an ambush,
I don't know their reasons, only that they came at me from everywhere;
But it is not in my nature to turn tail and run, so I went for one's throat,
And split it open, blood streamed down like in a mystical stream on to that moonlit jungle path,
Perhaps they had never seen their own blood before... they ran away.

It was a week from then that I finally admitted to having sustained serious injuries,
I remember that night- an exceptionally cold night; the following morning- I never woke up.
So that was the story of my life,
But do you humans care? I'll tell you what....
I didn't make this trip back up for nothing:
It was to say that I see a bit of 'me' in 'you', way too much to say sooth,
You too are selfish, cruel, merciless and every other thing you can think of,
In common dog-speak, my story is pretty much yours too;
All that 'you and your humanity' has come to:
A Dog's Life...
You still think I am talking about a dog?

It is I, a Dog

Grandmother's Wise Recipes For Success: Time Tested Wisdom For Directing Your Work and Personal Life

by Kal Edwards

Meat Loaf

Trafford Publishing (2006)

ISBN 1412080541

Reviewed by Debra Gaynor for Reader Views (8/06)

Grandmothers have wisdom to share with us that is time tested. Wisdom that has been learned the hard way. Kal Edwards was blessed with a Grandmother that shared her vast wisdom with him. We're blessed that he shares that wisdom with us.

Kal's grandmother taught him many things. She taught him not to waste things. He watched as she hemmed flour sacks. Flour sacks made good dishtowels. "Oh, we had no money for fancy things ... we just always used what was on hand." She also taught him to be prepared. One way is to keep your clothes pressed, organized, fresh and ready to wear." She showed him that the same could be applied to ones life, keep ones "skills current, take classes to broaden ones interests, and continually add to ones skills and talents."

Grandmother continued to share her wisdom teaching about listening more than talking. Some people are so interested in their own thought that they never hear what anyone else says. "People will always remember the person who shows interest by listening."

Much of the wisdom Grandmother passed on to Kal would have been called "common sense" by her. Unfortunately many people don't have "common sense". Grandmother took Kal into her kitchen and taught him as she cooked. She showed him how putting extra effort into things brought results. She taught him about being polite to others." A truly polite person is one that honors courtesy, conduct and character in any personal encounter."

What Grandmother wanted more than anything to teach Kal was to live life to its fullest. We can only do that when we care about others and when we truly know what we want out of life. Kal's grandmother is truly wise.

This book contains a "Personal Renewal Planner" at the end of each chapter. There are questions and a place to record your actions or answers. A good cookbook will have a few stains and notes in the margins from use. This book, like a cookbook, is intended for more than reading.

I picked up this book expecting recipes for apple pies, corn bread, and meat loaf. What I received instead was even more delicious. I received wisdom from someone who is very wise. I can picture Kal as a young boy sitting at his grandmother's table watching closely as she rolled out her piecrust, listening closely as she gave out bites of wisdom. I hope someday my grandchildren tell their children bites of wisdom from me. I would like to think they would say, "My grandmother taught me to be kind to others, to listen to what they are saying, to never stop learning and to enjoy life." This book has warmed my heart. The wisdom enclosed with such love can and should be applied to all aspects of our lives. I highly recommend this book for everyone. Apply this wisdom to your personal life and professional life.

Cooking Measurements And The Inexperienced Cook

Tuesday, February 8, 2011

Do cooking measurements matter? When a recipe calls for a pinch of this and a dash of that, does it really matter how much you put in? What will happen if you leave an ingredient out?

If you're an inexperienced cook, you wonder about the answers to these and other questions. Let's take the mystery out of cooking measurements once and for all.

Meat Loaf

What's a Pinch or a Dash?

A pinch of an ingredient (usually a spice) is literally the amount of the ingredient that can be held between your thumb, your index finger, and your middle finger. A small pinch is the amount of an ingredient that can be held between your thumb and one finger (take your pick which one you want to use). A dash, on the other hand, is a measurable amount - less than one-eight of a teaspoon but more than one-sixteenth.

Converting Cooking Measurements

Follow this table to convert U.S. measurements to metric:

1/5 teaspoon...1 ml

1 teaspoon...5 ml

1 tablespoon...15 ml

1 fluid ounce...30 ml

1/5 cup...50 ml

1 cup...240 ml

2 cups (1 pint)...470 ml

4 cups (1 quart)...95 liter

4 quarts (1 gal.)...3.8 liters

1 oz. weight...28 grams

1 pound...454 grams

What If It Gets Left Out?

Including all the minor ingredients is more important in baking things like cakes, cookies, and pastries, than it is in meat loaf, omelets, and salads. Generally speaking, it's a good idea to follow the recipe. Whoever wrote the recipe experimented with the cooking measurements to get them just right.

Now, if you know you can't stand the taste of cumin, and you want to substitute oregano for cumin in a meat loaf recipe, that's one thing. But leaving ginger out of ginger spice cookies is just wrong.

Measuring Tools

The importance of cooking measurements has led to a whole industry of cooking measuring cups and spoons. One of the most popular cooking measuring cup sets today is a blue ceramic set that looks just like a big coffee cup, marketed by Nigella Lawson the beautiful and famous television chef.

The most popular measuring spoons are heart-shaped measuring spoons by RSVP International. These spoons have arrow handles and heart-shaped measuring spoons. They make the user smile every time they use them.

The final cooking measurement device every cook needs is a scale. The best scales are digital, with the ability to accurately weigh items in bowls or plates or on slips of waxed paper.

Growing a Themed Kitchen Herb Garden

Monday, February 7, 2011

I really like learning to cook meals from other countries, especially some of the best Mexican dishes. Do you enjoy tasting yummy international dishes? You can try your hand at planting a yummy themed kitchen herb garden.

You can cultivate the major herb plants in your own garden and have the freshest ingredients to add to your recipes, or experiment on your own.

Meat Loaf

You do not need a special location for your themed kitchen herb garden. You can grow them in containers or in your usual garden bed.

Look no further than these suggestions for your own themed kitchen herb garden:

Asian: From Thai and Vietnamese to Indian and Chinese, Asian cooking has a lot of flavors and spices to select from. Try raising lemongrass, cayenne pepper, cardamom and anise in your Asian kitchen herb garden. The licorice taste of anise adds a warm sweetness to baked goods, soups and Indian dinners. You can brew it with your tea and add it to your cookie dough for a special treat. The growing popularity of Asian cuisine has helped it fall back into favor in the US in the last few years. Mexican: Not a week goes by when I don't chow down on a Mexican meal. I love to eat my favorite Mexican meals, such as burritos, fajitas or quesadillas at least once a week. The best Mexican recipes usually include these: Cayenne pepper, Cilantro and Garlic. Italian: What is your favorite Italian dish? My favorite is lasagna, of course. Among the best herb plants to use in your Italian dishes are basil, fennel, parsley, garlic, marjoram, oregano, rosemary and thyme. You can add garlic to all your favorite Italian dishes and savor the oniony taste! You can add garlic to your mashed potatoes and even roast it with some olive oil to eat it by itself. Do not overcook your garlic because it loses its flavor the longer it cooks. Middle East: If you haven't tried any of the exciting and flavorful foods from the Middle East and Northern Africa, you are missing some fantastic dishes. There is such variety in the array of herbs used in Middle Eastern cooking. Add chick peas, couscous and figs to your pita and herbed yogurt sauce for something extra special. These herbs are often to be found in the recipes for Middle Eastern meals: cardamom, garlic, parsley, rosemary and saffron. German: You can have your own Oktoberfest any time you like if you have got all the right German herb plants. These are a few of my favorite and most often used in authentic German dinners: chives, dill, horseradish, sage and thyme. Horseradish, which is in the mustard family, is a wonderful condiment, opening the sinuses while adding tang to the taste buds. Use it to add an extra twang to beef, fish, cream cheese spreads, potato salad, mayonnaise and meat loaf.

One of the fantastic things about herb gardening it that herbs are a gift that keeps on giving. If you remove a few leaves from your sage plant, it will grow back. Oftentimes it can grow back bigger and fuller than it was before.

Good luck with your herb gardening. Be sure to let me know how your herb garden grows

A beef stew of a different kind is the following aromatic curry.

2 large onions, sliced

2 tart apples, peeled and diced

15ml curry powder

2 cloves garlic, crushed

5ml each turmeric, ground cinnamon and cumin

750g boneless beef chuck, cubed

7ml salt

50ml mild chutney

25ml brown vinegar

200ml tomato puree

250ml water

2 bay leaves

125ml coconut

If using, swirl in cream just before serving.

Frosted Meat Loaf

It's difficult to give a meat loaf airs, but the potato 'frosting' and a homemade gravy add to the appearance and flavour of this one.

Ingredients

125ml milk

1 egg

125ml quick-cooking oats

25ml oil

2 onions, chopped

500g minced beef

15ml Worcester sauce

25ml tomato sauce

50ml chopped parsley

1 medium-sized carrot, coarsely grated

5ml salt

5ml mixed dried herbs

FROSTING

6 medium potatoes, boiled and mashed

±100ml hot milk

25ml butter

1 egg yolk

Salt and pepper

Method

Beat milk with egg, add oats and leave to soak for 10 minutes. Heat oil and fry onions until lightly browned. Mix remaining ingredients, then add fried onion and milk mixture. Combine thoroughly and pack firmly into an oiled 25 x 8 x 7cm loaf tin. Bake at 180ºC for 1 hour. Stand for about 10 minutes or until juices are re-absorbed, then unmould onto flat, warmed serving dish.
Beat mashed potato with hot milk, butter and egg yolk until fluffy and creamy. Seasno, then swirl over the entire loaf, top and sides, and return to the oven at the same temperature for 15-20 minutes. Serve with a green vegetable and pumpkin baked in the oven at the same time. Serves 6.

How Long Does it Take to Bake Bread With a Bread Maker?

Wednesday, February 2, 2011

Baking bread with a bread maker is really simple. The best thing about it is that once you have added the ingredients you don't need to be around whilst it bakes the bread. What this means is that you can be asleep, or you can be cooking dinner or doing anything else. Ultimately this means that the time it takes to bake a loaf of bread is irrelevant, because you can just start it before you go out or whenever you want. A lot of bread makers come with timers which can be set so that it has bread finished in a certain number of hours, which means you can set them ready at night and wake up to a fresh loaf of bread.

These machines take in between 45 minutes to 3 hours to cook a loaf, but it depends on the type of bread that you are baking, the machine that you have and of course the size of the loaf that you are baking. Some machines are designed to mix the ingredients together very quickly and bake them at high temperatures, ready only 45 minutes later. You will find that these machines only bake small loaves, as it is impossible to get a big loaf to cook that quickly without burning it.

Making loaves takes a bit of learning, but it's not too difficult to do that. I have found that with a bit of trial and error you will soon be on your way to making some good food. Ideally get a bread maker with a timer; they are so handy!

Recipe For Rump Roast

Tuesday, February 1, 2011

Are you curious how to cook a rump roast? There are three very important things to remember when cooking a rump roast. If you pay attention to the roast as it cooks, and keep these things in mind, you will never fail to make a delicious meal. These very important secrets to remember are:

o To tie or not to tie: know when our piece of meat should be tied.
o Braise first, enjoy later: braising a piece of meat before cooking locks in moisture and flavor
o Give it time: the longer meat cooks the more tender it is, this also gives all the ingredients a chance to combine.

If your cut is symmetrical and has a consistent thickness then tying it probably is not important. If you're not so lucky then you will need to bundle the meat. Don't worry it isn't as difficult as it sounds. Simply tuck in any odd pieces then fold the meat into a tubular shape. Cut three pieces of kitchen twine and use them to secure your package.

Now, you are ready to season your meat. I like to use salt, pepper, and a tiny bit of cinnamon. Braise the meat in a skillet until all sides are lightly brown. Place roast, 4 or 5 carrots (cut up to desired size), 3 potatoes (quartered), 2 stalks of celery (cut up to desired size), and 1 pound of whole mushrooms in a crock pot.

Cook the mixture on high for 1 hour (for 3 pound roast) then reduce to low and cook 2 more hours. The longer it cooks the more tender it will be. This may vary depending on how hot your crock pot gets so watch to be sure it isn't getting dry. If it does a little bit of orange juice adds a lot of flavor to a rump roast. Now, you have learned how to cook roast.

This is a super easy meal. With this recipe there you don't even have to make a vegetable to go along side. Maybe you'll even have time to make dessert!
