2 Easy Meat Loaf Recipes for people Who Officially Can't Cook

Wednesday, July 13, 2011

Meat Loaves are surprisingly easy to make, so they should be the first choice for any husbands out there who indubitably fail in kitchen but want to try anyway. You can't indubitably go wrong with them, to be honest. If you're heading to a Xmas pot luck party this year, and you're one of those guys who is inclined to bring chips, then you should either try one of these incredibly easy meat loaf recipes, or just not go this year. There is never a good excuse for bringing chips to a pot luck party.

Hamburger Meat Loaf Recipe:

Meat Loaf

- 2 lbs of minced pork meat
- 3.5 oz of cured ham
- 4 eggs
- Sherry (a dash of, not the whole bottle!)
- Breadcrumbs
- Pepper

Preparation:

Whisk the eggs first in a large bowl (don't worry, we need all of the egg not just the white or yolk - just crack them open and don't get any shell in there). Next, add all the other stuff. Mix it wholly With Your Hands. Preheat the oven to 360 F (that's quite high, by the way). Dump the blend into an oven proof long cake mould and bake for 40 minutes! Done. That wasn't so bad, now was it. The next one has a exiguous more prep work but totally worth it. Are you ready for level 2?

Chicken Loaf:

- 1 lb of minced chicken breast (get this from the butcher, it's far too much effort to do it yourself)
- 7 oz of minced beef
- 1 egg
- 1 can of truffles
- 1 small can of pate
- 1 glass of cognac
- Ham
- Salt, pepper and butter

Preparation:

Mix together the various minced meats. Next, add in the egg, truffles, pate, and a dash of cognac (seriously, just a dash, this isn't supposed to be an alcoholic dish and there's a million more things we can make later that Do taste great with lots of cognac in them), as well as a exiguous salt, pepper, and butter (not too much). Mix with your hands again, but don't worry about things being a exiguous lumpy - texture is good in a meat loaf.

You'll need a cake mould again, and make sure you butter it before using it as this will indubitably stick to the sides if you don't. Place a slice or two of ham at the bottom, then throw the rest of the mix in, finishing the top layer with other slice of ham.

Bung it into the oven and bake for 40 minutes at 360F.

Comfort Food - It's Not Just for People Anymore

Sunday, May 8, 2011

Global radiation. Catastrophic earthquakes. Mid-century soothsayers predicting the end of the world. Movie theatres are full of doomsday scenarios. Even the Weather Channel feeds our eyes, minds and hearts negative and terrifying images of families staring at where their homes used to be and other images of never-ending destruction and disaster, recycling negative and traumatic events before our eyes over and over and over again.

When you and I feel anxious we may get some comfort food like a big bowl of soup, a piece of cake, some mac and cheese, or a nice big plate of meat loaf and mashed potatoes. One of my personal favorites is a steaming hot bowl of comfort called Malt-o-Meal. (This is not an article about nutrition.)

Meat Loaf

But what about your dog?

Your dog feels everything you feel. We don't really understand how they do it... it may be their sense of smell or another sense we don't know about. Dogs can smell death, can they smell anxiety? Or could it be their sense of hearing? Do they pick up signals in our breathing that could tell them our mood?

As humans we surely don't understand it fully. But when we feel unsettled, we go the fridge and fix ourselves a plate of comfort.

What is there for our best friends when they feel nervous?

Comfort food for dogs.

Now you can give your best friend some comfort food just for him. Maybe some Grammy Pot Pie for dogs, made with real chicken, whole barley, carrots, peas and parsley.

Or if your dog isn't in a pot pie mood, how 'bout a walk on the Cajun side with a healthy serving of Turducken? Turducken is a bayou classic but there's no reason why your dog can't enjoy it even if he's not creole. Made from yummy chicken, ground rice, oat meal, pearled barley, peas, apples, carrots, blueberries, cranberries and lots of other stuff, including amino acids.

Maybe your dog would prefer some Mediterranean comfort. There's a dog food called Mediterranean Banquet made with lamb and lamb broth, brown rice, chick peas, spinach, apples and olives.

For serious comfort there's Thanksgiving Dinner... for your dog. Yes, we're talking about major comfort, a canned dog food called Thanksgiving Dinner, made, of course, with turkey, turkey broth, turkey liver, fresh sweet potatoes, carrots, green beans and Granny Smith apples.

Great comfort foods for dogs.

With dog food choices like this there's no reason why your dog should have to go one minute without his own comfort food. In fact, what're you doing Friday night? Why not sit down for an hour or two of disaster TV and TWO delicious plates of turkey dinner, one for you, and one for your best friend.

Cheap Snacks for People on the Go

Tuesday, January 18, 2011

Are you one of those people who don't have time to relish a good breakfast because you're in a rush? Love to have a good snack to munch on during office breaks but don't want to spend too much? Want to have fast and cheap food? Here are tips to help you make your own snacks fast and easy.

Fantastic Sandwiches

Meat Loaf

This one's a no-brainer, but some might think that this is the most boring snack anybody's ever going to bring in a brown bag. College students almost live on their sandwich maker, panini press, or even a griddler. Frugal ideas call for frugal measures! You should try it sometime!

Is this snack boring? I think not! There are a hundred kind of sandwiches you can make, and it can save a lot of money! These snacks often have repeating ingredients so you don't have to get groceries each and every time you think of a new kind of sandwich to make. There's the classic grilled cheese; also cheesesteak sandwich made of leftover steak, cheese and pepper; roast beef sandwich topped with cheddar for good measure; healthy veggie sandwiches comprising of cheese, tomatoes, mushroom, and sweet onions; the favorite pizza pocket bursting with gooey mozzarella, topped with pepperoni and drizzled with leftover pasta sauce. Pick a favorite or two, vary the kind of sandwiches you bring every three days and you have a fantastic snack to cut cost, and which you're never going to get bored of!

As Healthy As A Salad

Making a good garden salad doesn't take more than 3 minutes to make and you can enjoy a healthy and filling snack. Keep salad staples in your fridge all the time, as the ingredients usually are cheap and easy to find. Shred lettuce, slice up onions, carrots, tomatoes, peppers, celery or basically anything you want to include. Store in a cool, dry spot in your fridge. Take it to lunch in a ziploc bag or small container. Simply pour dressing or apple cider vinegar when you're ready to eat!

All Rice

White rice is soft and chewy while brown rice is dry and has a wonderful earthy aroma. Rice is very versatile and very cheap! There are also hundreds of ways you can fix yourself a great dish and more. There are office workers who eat rice almost every work week because rice can last up to 3 to 4 days with proper storage. Imagine having not to worry what you're going to cook and saving money along the way!

A rice cooker is basically all you need when you're cooking rice. When it's done, you can jazz it up with BBQ sauce while it's still warm, add leftover chicken, sprinkle with chopped spring onions and you're good to go. You can also pair rice with a can of Campbells chili for .50, or a can of Progresso Minestrone soup. With rice and any of your your favorite soup, you can even stretch the dish for two meals.

Living on Bread Alone

Huge fan of bread rejoice! Not only does bread fill you up in no time, it is inexpensive and can last for about 5 days tops even sitting on your counter. Use bread for a quick sandwich; toast it and slobber with jelly; make quick and great tasting French toasts with it using milk, egg yolk, cinnamon; or make garlic toasts that smell like heaven.

If you're a bread addict, you might have a lot of day-old bread lying around. Stretch your food dollar by making bread salad with just a little bit of onions, basil, carrots, tomatoes and bread sprinkled with vinaigrette. You can also moisten your bread and add it to your meat loaf to make a larger meal!

Nothing is cheaper than using something that you have lying around, right? Save money by brown bagging your lunch and snacks. This helps you stay away from both restaurants and office cafeteria, as well as the vending machine that sucks the money out of your pockets!

A Return to Homesteading - Ten Reasons People Are Becoming More Self Reliant

Thursday, November 4, 2010

Tired of the rat race, fast food and feeling out of touch with your world? These days people are becoming more self reliant, depending on themselves for what they eat, what they wear and even how they light their homes and run their appliances. Here are ten reasons why people return to homesteading.

Inflation A year go at our local supermarket, a bargain loaf of bread cost about a dollar. Today, that same loaf of bread costs almost twice as much. As the dollar decreases in value and the cost of food increases, more people are turning to growing a garden, raising chickens and even keeping goats for food, eggs, meat, milk and cheese.

The Economy The recent loan crisis, the recession and the housing market have a lot of people concerned. Many believe there is a very real possibility of another great depression. During the last depression, those who had their own land and a big garden were able to avoid the soup lines and starvation. A return to homesteading is insurance against possible tough times ahead.

Disaster Insurance Likewise in the face of disaster, it's wise to be self-reliant and to be able to produce or have on hand sufficient food, water and even energy. Few cities have more than a few days worth of food on hand. Should we face a terrorist attack or another natural disaster like Katrina, self-reliance is a good way to be prepared.

Foodborne illnesses Salmonella in our peanut butter, e coli on our lettuce and tomatoes and even beef, and poison in our pet food. People these days are growing more concerned about what is going into their food - and looking for ways to prepare that food themselves instead.

Chemicals in Food Even when they don't have salmonella or e coli, most of the food we buy is processed, loaded with chemicals such as MSG and preservatives. When we return to homesteading, we begin eating simple, whole foods that truly nourish our bodies.

Concern For The Environment Homesteading is a saner, more balanced approach to food production. With organic gardening, you don't just take from the earth; you also give back by composting. Many homesteaders also use solar and wind energy to power their homes - clean, cheap and safe for the environment.

Pesticides By growing organically, we not only eliminate dangerous pesticides from our food, we also eliminate it from our patch of land, cleaning up the earth one small patch at a time.

Health Benefits Homesteading involves chores outside and lots of fresh air and exercise. We raise our own food, which means we have a more whole and natural diet that strengthens our bodies.

A Yearning For Simplicity Modern society is fast-paced, complex and exhausting. Most people are too busy earning that four-car garage to actually enjoy anything. Many return to homesteading for the slower pace and the chance to actually enjoy life.

Reconnect With Family When we weed the garden or feed the chickens, we can get the children involved to help. We can turn to our parents and grandparents for advice on how to pluck a chicken or grow tomatoes. Homesteading connects us to family in a unique and powerful way that an office job never will.

So take the first steps toward self reliance today. Plant a garden or even get a chicken or two. That way, you can begin your return to homesteading and face the future with confidence.
