5 Tips for Parents With Picky Eaters

Sunday, January 9, 2011

It can be incredibly tough to keep up with healthy meals for your family, especially if you have to cook for picky eaters in your house. This can be an especially difficult challenge for any parent to keep up with between work and home life responsibilities, let alone making special meals for your kids every time. Fortunately, there are some simple techniques you can use to work with your children to get them interested in new and different kinds of food.

1) Participation: One of the best tips for picky eaters is to get them involved in their food making and decisions. By recruiting their participation in choosing and making their own food, it gives them some control over that aspect of their life and can help them start to try new foods.

2) Covert Vegetables: If you are worried about not getting enough fruits and vegetables, you can sneak them into other foods without them noticing. A great option for this is smoothies! You can make them at home easily although some kids like V8 also. You can also sneak tons of vegetables into meat loaf, home made burgers, soups, and tons of pasta dishes.

3) Stop Forcing: Forcing a child to eat everything on the plate is one of the worst things you can do to your kids at home. A much healthier approach (and usually easier) is to insist on your child simply trying each food on their plate.

4) Start Young: By introducing your child to a variety of foods from a very young age, you may be able to prevent having a picky toddler altogether. Eating healthy can be a family change from when your child is young and you just might never have to deal with a picky eater later. There are plenty of healthy snack recipes for kids with excellent ideas on what to serve.

5) Communication: Sometimes the reason your child refuses to eat something may have nothing to do with taste and more to do with texture. If the texture is what they dislike, you can start making better food choices for picky eaters by changing either the food or the way it is cooked.
