Summer Squash Chutney

Monday, January 31, 2011

A juicy sauce you can use is summer squash chutney. You combine it with lemon juice, orange juice, red onions and some orange juice. This goes very well with any type of meat, but works the best with chicken.

You will need a table spoon of fresh virgin olive oil, one half cup of chopped red onion. You will also need two small squash, about half a pound each squash. Two small zucchinis that are diced and 2 teaspoons of ginger. For the juice you will want half a cup of orange juice, two tea spoons of lemon juice and two teaspoons of honey. For extra seasoning and flavour you may want to add in a bit of orange peel and some salt and pepper.

First, take a heavy sauce pan and pour the olive oil on med-high heat. Throw in the red onion and let it cook for a bit, mixing in until it gets very soft. Throw in the other vegetables like the zucchini, the ginger and the squash. Make sure there is enough oil to lightly cover the veggies. This makes them cook uniformly without burning on any one side.

You want to now put in your lemon juice and mix in the orange juice as well and increase the heat a little bit until it starts boiling. Then, when that happens, let the vegetables simmer on medium heat for 15 minutes until all the veggies get soft.

At the end, mix in the honey and some orange peel and you can put some salt and pepper if you prefer.

This is very low calories and very healthy and goes well with any types of grilled meats.

Meatloaf and Mac And Cheese

It's been a day that started out with the best of intentions. A day meant for cleaning, organizing, catching up on all those unfinished projects but instead you sat down, just for a minute, to watch a little TV and relax for a moment before getting started. Unfortunately for you and your to do list you stumble across a Planet of the Apes movie marathon. You can kiss the day good bye. Not only are you not going to get any of the chores done, you will not even bother to get out of your pajamas.

A day like this is perfect for a dinner like this one. The earthy mushroom aroma of the meatloaf and the warm nutty scent of the Mac n' Cheese filling your kitchen will make you seem like a hero, like you've worked on it all day. You'll be able to get this started just as you've finished your Escape From The Planet of The Apes and be done and ready to serve in time to catch the grand finale of the Battle for the Planet of the Apes. And some of that procrastination guilt will be alleviated by the praise and thanks you'll receive upon serving this moist, savory meatloaf along side this gooey Mac n' Cheese with its golden crunchy crust.

6. Continue with alternating layers of pasta and cheese to the top of the baking pan ending with a layer of cheese.

7. Evenly sprinkle breadcrumbs over the top.

8. Bring half and half to a simmer in a small sauce pot.

9. Slowly whisk hot half and half into eggs just a little at a time as not to cook the eggs.

10. Pour this mixture over mac and cheese. This will hold everything together creating a casserole when baked.

11. Place mac and cheese on bottom rack of the oven to achieve a golden crunchy crust. Cook for 30-40 minutes or until top is golden.

If for some reason this doesn't all get finished tonight it can be stored easily in the refrigerator. Slice up the rest of the meat loaf and wrap each piece individually. This way it can be enjoyed as a sandwich later. It is just as good cold as it is warmed up. The mac n cheese is almost better the next day nuked in the microwave by itself or with a meatloaf sandwich.

10 Ways to Use Leftover Meatloaf

Sunday, January 30, 2011

Have you ever made meatloaf, and found yourself with enough left overs to last the whole week? If you're like me, I do not enjoy eating the same meal more than twice in a row, once for dinner, then lunch the next day. I discovered that a little meatloaf can go a long way, and that does not mean by sprouting legs from sitting too long in the fridge.

The following is a list of things that can be done so your family will not even recognize the meat loaf from the night before. This list is by no means exhaustive, but it should give you a good start, and may spark your own creativity.

1. Whenever you make too much of something, one option is always to divide into individual portion sizes, date, label, and freeze. You can easily grab it out for a quick meal.
2. Easy Chili: Crumble up your leftover meat loaf into a pot. Add a can of kidney beans, rinsed and drained. Add a couple cans of tomato sauce, or your choice of ground or chopped tomatoes with juice (if your tomato base is runny, add a tablespoon of cornmeal). Add a tablespoon of chili powder, half a tablespoon of seasoned salt, and half a tablespoon of brown sugar. Simmer for ½ hour and serve with cheese and sour cream if desired.
3. Shepherd's Pie: Crumble the leftover meat loaf. Stir in a can of cream of mushroom soup and half a can of water or milk. Spread into bottom of casserole dish. Add a layer of your favorite vegetable: if canned just drain and add, if fresh or frozen, cook and drain then add. Top with mashed potatoes and cook on 350 for half an hour.
4. Tater tot casserole: Prepare meat and vegetables like you would for shepherd's pie. On top of the vegetables, put a layer of chopped Velveeta or sliced American cheese. Top with tater tots and cook at 400 for 20-25 min.
5. Chip dip: Mix meat loaf with salsa and Velveeta, or similar cheese. Microwave until cheese is melted. Mix well and serve with tortilla chips.
6. Sloppy Joes: Put meat loaf into a frying pan with ketchup, mustard and barbeque sauce. Simmer for 10-15 minutes on low heat. Serve with pickles on buns.
7. Patty Melts: Slice the meat loaf into medium slices (about burger thickness). On a frying pan or griddle, place a piece of buttered bread, butter side down. Place the meat loaf slice on the bread with a slice of cheese on it. Toast another piece of bread on the griddle for the top. Sauté onion rings and place on the meat loaf and cheese combination. Top with the other piece of bread and serve with desired condiments.
8. Taco Salad: Chop meat loaf in a frying pan and cook on medium heat. Add a package of taco seasoning and amount of water indicated on the package. Simmer for 10-15 minutes. Serve with tortilla chips, lettuce, cheese, sour cream and tomatoes.
9. Spaghetti Sauce: Add crumbled meat loaf to a sauce pan. Add two cans of tomato sauce, ½ tablespoon Italian Seasoning, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Simmer for 15-20 minutes. Serve with your favorite cooked noodles.
10. Biscuits and gravy: Crumble meat loaf into a sauce pan and set to medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons of flour and stir until coated. Add 2 cups of milk and stir until thickened. Add salt and pepper to taste and serve over biscuits.

The Wonderful Zojirushi Bread Machine - The Best Bread Maker

You'll find nothing more desirable than the aroma of fresh-baked bread, right out of the oven. Unfortunately, most of us just lack enough time to prepare our own bread in our own kitchen these days. We tend to accept "artisan" loaves which can be stale and bland when we get them home, or perhaps we simply buy whatever's in a bag at the store. Fortunately, you will find other choices. Contemporary bread machines, most notably the Zojirushi bread machines, enable us to bake bread free of all the kneading and monitored rising. Basically, you simply insert the ingredients, set the timer, and awaken or arrive home to fresh baked bread.

It's Not Just for Bread

Meat Loaf

Zojirushi's bread machine isn't really simply about bread, either. It's also great for creating the dough for similar baked goods, cakes, jams, starter for sourdoughs including foods you wouldn't imagine go in a bread machine, for instance, meat loaf. The instructional video which is included with every Zojirushi machine can have you baking up a storm in almost no time at all.

All bread machines from this company offer a programmable timer, liquid measuring cup and double ended spoon, together with a recipe crammed instruction guide. The LCD display is large and very easy to read, the kneading blades ensure your loaf is kneaded evenly throughout, and the durable manufacture makes sure that the machine will be available for many years of use. Plus, Zojirushi knows you don't have much space. They've constructed their bread machine in a compact size that doesn't take up much space, and designed it to guarantee a low sound level.

Set and Forget Overnight

Bread can be made overnight or during the day, using the timer. Additionally, it can be made in two hours approximately, for the baker in a hurry. Work with the viewing window to find out how your bread is doing, and utilize the three recipe memory function to keep track of your favorites. You can manage crust thickness with a simple setting, as well. The pan is rectangular, and makes a average two pound loaf - not round or weirdly formed bread like some older machines. The bread still arrives horizontally, the way in which it should, and produces standard slices.

The limited one year warranty will help you guarantee that your bread machine is primed for action, as soon as you will be needing it. If you enjoy the great taste of fresh-baked bread, you'll enjoy the Zojirushi bread machine - it helps even the most frantic folks savor the great taste of homemade bread, without wasting all day in the kitchen. Take your time to check out this reasonably priced deluxe bread maker, and see what a difference it can make in your kitchen.

The Wonderful Zojirushi Bread Machine - The Best Bread Maker

How To Make The Best Meatloaf Dinner

I have been making this meatloaf dinner for my family for more then thirty years they seem to always want more. Every time I make a meatloaf dinner the family all gathers for dinner to eat and talk about every thing from sports to world events. I hope people will enjoy this dinner with their family. I enjoy cooking for people I just do not get the chance to cook that much for any one right now. I hope this meal will bring your families back time after time like my family has.

First you need about three pounds of ground beef to make a good size meat loaf. This will feed about five to six people for dinner. Put the ground beef in a glass bowl so it can be mixed up. First take to grade a large eggs break them and mix up with the ground beef thoroughly. Then shake in about a third of a can or jar of seasoned bread crumbs this will give the meat loaf more flavor. Take one medium can of stewed tomatoes mix then up with all other ingredients. make sure the the tomatoes are mixed completely up in the meat loaf not on top.

Meat Loaf

Preheat the oven to three hundred twenty five degrees put the meat loaf in a glass baking pan let the meatloaf cook for about one hour and twenty five minutes. Make sure while the meat loaf is cooking to drain all grease from the baking pan every fifteen minutes to keep the flavor in the meat loaf. Cook the meatloaf until light brown on top.

I usually make mashed potatoes from fresh peeled potatoes to go with the meatloaf. Make a fresh salad with lettuce tomatoes and cucumbers then just add a dressing to the salad and dinner is all set and ready to serve. Cut the meat loaf in thin slices and serve with mash potatoes and salad.

If you want add a heated dinner roll to the dinner I hope people enjoy this family meal and spend many hours talking together . Please Enjoy this dinner as a family as I do with my family.

Lamb For Beginners

Friday, January 28, 2011

Lamb is a scary kind of meat for those who don't eat it regularly, but it seems like all most people eat in this country is chicken pork and beef, so a little lamb every now and again is a refreshing change of pace. Here are some of my favorite things to try with a meat you may not be so familiar with.

Lamb with rosemary seasons - Crock pots are a great way to cook this meat in a roast format, because it retains its lovely moistness that way. Season the roast with cracked pepper, salt, rosemary, and anything else you may be partial too. This is super with asparagus and roasted baby red spuds. I like to serve it to my in laws for Christmas Supper, and it is better than eating turkey every holiday.

Teriyaki Lamb Chops with Pineapple - Marinade the chops for about four or five hours, and grill them. A fresh pineapple gives a much better flavor than a canned one does, and believe me this dish is worth doing right. I love the flavor and uniqueness the lamb gives off, and the surprise on the family's faces when they see what's for dinner. You do have to be careful not to dry out the chops, they do that easily, which is why I grill them on a pan and not on the barbeque.

Shitake Mushroom and Cream Sauce Chops - This is super easy, a can of cream of mushroom soup, and then I like to slice up fresh shitakes and put them in the sauce. This is again a dish, because of the cut of meat, you have to be careful not to dry out. Serve with mashed red potatoes with skin on, and corn is another good side, but bread for whatever reason goes poorly with the meal.

Lamb Stew - Worcestershire sauce makes great seasoning for the broth, and almost any and all vegetables go great in the stew, as with any long time cooking meal I stew it in a crock pot to make the meat tender and retain the moisture. This is a great recipe to serve with home baked bread rolls or a potato loaf. I like a thinner more soup like broth as opposed to the thicker gravy like stuff, and more people are apt to try the soup version.

Never fear to try a new idea, many folks are afraid to try lamb but it is a wonderful meat to play with when you are a bored cook at home.

Brain Booster

Do you want a quick brain boost? And do you want a longer term brain boost? Probably both, and we now know a great deal about how to do both.

I have resorted to milk chocolate over the decades of my life to help my flagging attention in the afternoon, especially after those meat loaf and mashed potato lunches I used to have as a kid in grade school.

Meat Loaf

But what we really need is simply a change in attention or attentional style, and there are many ways to do that.

Daydreaming is a natural tool that we use to refresh our neurochemistry.

However that tool may not always get affirmed in the class room or the board room, but heart rate variability biofeedback, for example, or a quick brain boost using a computerized brain fitness program will fill the bill quite nicely, switching my attentional style and refreshing my neurons at the same time. A walk or a quick workout, even in my office, could accomplish the same thing. Your supervisor will not mind your having an exercise ball in the office if your productivity increases, right?

Nobody knew too long ago that we humans grew new neurons every day if we took care of the pillars of brain fitness, and nobody knew how plastic the human brain was, which means how quickly and efficiently the brain creates new connections between neurons when something new is learned.

So the best way to boost your brain is to find ways to attend to the pillars of brain fitness while you are involved in your daily routine.

The pillars, and if you want an excellent resource to discover information about the pillars of brain fitness, then please read Brainfit for Life by Simon Evans, Ph.D. and Paul Burghardt, Ph.D.

The most important brain booster is exercise, and the good news is you do not need to join an expensive club or buy expensive outfits to provide your brain what it needs in this regard.

A wonderful model for exercise that you can do at home is the HIIT or high intensity interval training model.

Don't let the acronym scare you. HIIT means that you do 30 second intervals of exercises you choose, like your grade school calisthenics for example, for 10 minutes. Or if you are walking around the block you speed it up so that you are breathing deeply enough to make talking and breathing difficult.

Evans and Burghardt call that increasing your physical activity, and perhaps you move eventually to something a little more formal like going to the YMCA and doing a physical workout.

If you want to take a look at a model of HIIT that can be done at home, here is one that I recommend. After you finish your chocolate and your workout, you will need to attend to nutrition, a very important aspect of brain boosting, including getting your omega 3 fatty acid.

Evans and Burghardt make some recommendations about sleep and stress management also, but the last pillar of brain fitness is one that I think offers a wonderful range of brain boosting opportunity, and that is the novel learning experience.

That is where you get to try out some computerized tools which are challenging, efficient, and have some research behind them

Some are computerized but not online. You buy them and download them, and they complement your other brain boosting activities perfectly. Others are online, and you can keep them booted up and switch over to them for a few minutes of brain boosting between clients or calls.

As a result of attending to the pillars of brain fitness, you keep growing new brain cells and increasing neuroplasticity.

Not sure about you, but I thing brain boosting, especially because it is so easy to include in your daily routine, ought to be mandatory.

I bet you even know some folks who you could gift the brain fitness tools to, because the need is so great.

Brain Booster

Michael S. Logan is a brain fitness expert, a counselor, a student of Chi Gong, and licensed one on one HeartMath provider. I enjoy the spiritual, the mythological, and psychological, and I am a late life father to Shane, 10, and Hannah Marie, 4, whose brains are so amazing. http://www.askmikethecounselor2.com

Three Traditional German Recipes

Thursday, January 27, 2011

German cuisine has become very popular not only in Europe, but all over the world. Most of their food is comprised of beef, poultry, fish, or pork; pork being the most popular choice of meat. Most German foods are not spicy, although mustard is an extremely popular condiment for sausages (the form in which most of their meat is prepared). Roasted meat and stews are also very popular ways to prepare meat. In this article, I have included three of my favorite traditional German recipes. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

Kielbasa and Sauerkraut

Ingredients:

6 apples (peeled, cored, and chopped)
2 lbs kielbasa sausage (sliced)
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 (32 oz) package sauerkraut

Directions:

In a large skillet, heat the apples and sauerkraut over a medium heat. Let this mixture simmer for about 10 minutes or until the apples have turned soft. Add in the brown sugar and sliced kielbasa and mix well. Cook for an additional five minutes, or until the sausage meat is heated all the way through.

Rye Bread

Ingredients:

3 1/4 cups rye flour
2 1/2 cups bread flour
2 packages active dry yeast
1 tsp salt
2 tbsp sugar
2 tbsp butter
1 1/2 cups lukewarm milk
1/2 cup warm water
1/2 cup molasses

Directions:

In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water. In a large bowl, mix together the salt, sugar, and milk. Beat in the molasses, butter, 1 cup of rye flour, and the yeast/water mixture. A blender works best for this part. Mix in the remaining flour using a wooden spoon or plastic baking spatula. Fold in the white flour until the dough begins to stiffen. Knead on a floured surface until the dough is smooth. If the dough is sticky, add flour to it. Cover the dough with a wet towel and let it rise for an hour and a half (or until it has doubled in size). Punch the dough a few times, then divide it in half. Shape each section into a loaf, then place them on a greased cookie sheet to rise again for another hour and a half. Bake at 375 degrees F for about half an hour.

Apple Cake

Ingredients:

4 cups of apples (peeled, cored, and diced)
2 cups sugar
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 cup vegetable oil
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 eggs

Directions:

In a bowl, mix together the eggs and oil until the mixture is creamy. Add in the sugar and the vanilla extract and beat thoroughly. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon. Slowly add the egg mixture into this, mixing until well combined. Fold the apples into the mixture. Spread the mixture into a greased 9 x 13 inch baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees F for about 45 minutes. Allow the cake to cool on a wire rack before serving.

Germany Travel Tip - WaWi In Munich

Munich in Bavaria has the reputation to be the city of beer and breweries. Combined with the unique Bavarian live style it comes to no surprise, that beer gardens for every ones taste can be found, with some of them looking back to a long history. South in Munich, in the district Großhesselohe, you will find the Waldwirtschaft, best translated with Forest-Inn, but commonly known by Munich's citizens as WaWi. This is a truly original beer garden high above the valley of the river Isar and the most beautiful place for a typical Bavarian Brotzeit.

Live music is high on the agenda at WaWi with a rich program including traditional Jazz such as Dixieland, Blues and Swing with local- and international bands performing daily and nightly. On a sunny Sunday morning you will be surprised to meet so many like minded people here and great fun is guaranteed. Huge trees provide you with shade on a hot summer day and there is space to accommodate up to 2,200 guests, who will be primarily seated on wooden table sets. Additionally a tent covers the heart of the beer garden, in case the weather is not so great during the stay. Since the new owner started in 1981, WaWi became one of the all year round operating and best known beer gardens in Bavaria. So maybe that's why you will find the rich and famous sitting right next to you.

Meat Loaf

Beer is a part of culture in Munich and already around 1600, Munich had reached its peak with 80 breweries! In the 19th century there were still 60, with small ones eventually closing their doors or taken over by bigger companies such as Löwenbräu. Today there are 6 breweries left, also providing the beers for the worldwide unrivaled Oktoberfest. Todays breweries are Augustiner, Hacker Pschorr, the state-run Hofbräuhaus, Löwenbräu, Paulaner and the Spaten-Brauerei.

Beer gardens started to exist already around the middle of the 16th century. In those days for security reasons, a fire could easily break out; it was only aloud to brew beer between the end of September and end of April each year. The so called Märzenbier, a stronger March-beer, was brewed to last through the summer months. To cool the beer, special beer-cellars were constructed near the breweries. Because of the high underground water level in Munich deep cellars were out of question and that's why many trees, especially robust and big leaved chestnut trees were planted to provide coolness and shade. Off course the breweries started to add tables and chairs and served customers who came in huge numbers. The beer gardens were born, but local restaurant owners did not fancy this competition and King Ludwig I finally forbid the sale of food in those beer-gardens. No obstacle for Munich's beer garden lovers though, they responded by bringing their own food to the premises and the tradition of a Brotzeit was born, and is still sacred to real Bavarian.

In case you visit a real beer garden don't be surprised to see people doing just that or much better, why don't you join in this tradition? Here's what you need to make it authentic: a table-cloth, best red and white checkered, not blue and white diamonds! Wooden boards, cutlery and napkins; Radi, a long white radish and a special sharp knife to cut the Radi in spirals; Leberkaas, a kind of meat loaf, regional cheese like Emmentaler, Romadur or Limburger, salt, pepper and mustard; fresh country butter, brown bread and fresh Brezn, or Pretzel. Other toppings for your bread could be tomatoes, chives, small red radish, lard, also mixed with greaves and Obatzda. This a savory cream of mashed Camembert cheese, butter, very fine chopped onions, spiced with salt, pepper, paprika, caraway and a bit of wheat beer! Now, don't bring your Brotzeit in a plastic bag but in a natural wicker basket since by tradition, all materials used should be as natural as possible! Off course this is not a complete list off foods, add potato- or sausage salad, oh and maybe even candles for the time after sun down. The Merits Of A Plant-Based Diet, Just The Facts Please

Wednesday, January 26, 2011

When it comes to a healthy diet many folks with whom I have spoken attempt to deny plain facts and plain statistics by citing one example that they hope will refute the obvious truth.

The vast majority of evidence clearly shows that a plant-based diet heals, while an animal- based diet leads to cancer and heart disease among other unfortunate health issues.

Therefore if you are having an intelligent discussion about health matters and you become overwhelmed by the facts please know that the facts do not change nor do they need adjusting just because you cite the case of your dear great grandmother as an example of one who ate bacon and eggs for breakfast, bologna for lunch, meat loaf for dinner, and smoked 2 packs of regular Camels every day and still lived to be ninety two. This is the exception and certainly not the rule and should not be taken too seriously as a statistic since it would be difficult to find a significant amount of other individuals who could boast the same. It should also be noted that just existing for ninety two years when in reality the last thirty of them were spent in pain racking illness does not really make a person a poster child for the merits of bacon and cigarettes.

Actually medical evidence is clear, consistent and astonishingly one sided. Vegetarians are far less likely to suffer from cancer, heart disease, diabetes, or osteoporosis. They are also far less prone to obesity.

The largest study of its kind ever conducted was the China-Oxford-Cornell Study which revealed that a typical meat eater would be over fifteen times more likely to die from heart disease, and that women were five times more likely to suffer from breast cancer than folks who obtained no more than five percent of their protein requirements from eating animals and their by-products. This is just one study, and as previously stated the evidence is just ridiculously one sided in favor of refraining from animal foods and adhering to a plant-based diet.

These facts are not meant to infer that vegetarians cannot practice unhealthy eating and lifestyle choices, because they certainly can. If one refrains from eating meat but instead opts for junk food and soda pop, never exercises, and does not drink enough water or get enough sleep such a person should not imagine that not eating meat is going to save his or her health. Even if he or she were to enjoy excellent health and vitality throughout a long life this would not be a normal outcome to such a deficient lifestyle or health program.

The bottom line is that if you are a meat eater your chances of becoming a cancer, heart disease, or diabetes statistic raises exponentially, while also being far more likely to suffer osteoporosis and other diseases than those who refrain from eating animal foods. And of course you have a far greater chance of becoming obese also. Whether you stick your head in the sand, pull the covers over your head, or put your hands over your ears and close your eyes, it will not change the fact that your lifestyle and eating habits are killing you.

I am passionate about health issues, and the state of the health of our wonderful America. I believe the American diet is literally killing us and that a steady flow of money and perks from the meat, egg, and dairy industries to the U.S. government is the reason we have had a long sustained brainwashing campaign that has precipitated the shift from a predominantly plant-based diet to an animal-based diet. The result has been an unprecedented increase in heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and cancers of all varieties. I believe Americans are suffering from a lack of truthful information concerning our diets. I enjoy writing motivational articles that will help to correct the problem regarding this lack of information and also examine the prevailing misinformation in the light of truth.

Cooking With Quinoa

Have you ever experimented with cooking quinoa before? I you have not yet given it a try, you should try it for yourself and see why so many people have begun cooking quinoa on a regular basis. This ancient grain has been cultivated in South America for almost 6,000 years, but in the last few years it has steadily been gaining popularity in the United States. This is thanks to a great deal of attention that it has received from nutritional experts - most all of who refer to quinoa as a super food or super grain.

A relative to spinach and beets, quinoa is actually not a grain at all. Rather, it is a seed. The reason that it is commonly referred to as a grain is because that is how it is treated in cooking. It is considered to be much more nutritious than most grains, largely because of it's impressive amino acid profile. While most plant based foods are short on at least one of the nine amino acids that we must get from food, this is not the case with quinoa. Because of this, it is considered to be a complete protein source. People who are trying to watch their diets also enjoy quinoa, thanks to the fact that it has low-glycemic carbohydrates which we now know are much healthier than white carbohydrates. In addition to this, quinoa is loaded with fiber, vitamins and minerals. More than one health guru has stated that quinoa just may be the perfect food. Even NASA has taken the time to research quinoa to examine its potential as a crop to be grown in long term space missions.

Meat Loaf

A great thing about quinoa is that is is one of the most versatile foods you can find. This means that you can enjoy it any time of day. What other food can you stay works just as well as your morning cereal as it does in your favorite stir fry recipes? In addition to in stir fry and as a cereal, other popular ways to enjoy quinoa include in soups, salads and casseroles. You can use it as a binding ingredient in meatballs and meat loaf and even toast it to put over yogurt. If you have not yet tried it, why not give quinoa a try?

How to Bake Perfect Bread

Tuesday, January 25, 2011

There are few aromas more warm and welcoming than the delightful smell of home made bread baking in the oven. Bread as been around over 10,000 years but making break is an activity that has diminished as our daily schedules have become more busy and hectic. It can still be a very satisfying and rewarding experience however, if you take advantage of all the modern techniques and tools that have been developed specifically for break making.

There are four ingredients used to make the basic load of bread - yeast, flour, water, or other liquid, and salt. You can add a huge variety of delicious and interesting ingredients to this short, simple list to make many types of flavorful and unique breads. A few examples of great choices of ingredients to add to your favorite bread recipe include raisins and other dried fruits, nuts and seeds.

Yeast is a key ingredient to some of the most delicious bread made. You don't know what you're missing if you have never baked breads at home using yeast. It takes a bit of time for the final product to be produced when baking bread with yeast, but the rewards make it worth the wait. There are two types of yeast - yeast that is prepackaged and available at your local grocer and that you cultivate and ferment at home with a starter. Either is effective when making your home-made yeast bread, but it's important to be sure that the yeast is fresh. When using the prepackaged yeast, be sure to check the "best if used by date". Cake yeast, if you can find it, is a form of fresh yeast that makes a really wonderful loaf of bread, but if must be used within 2-3 days or may mold.

The type flour you choose to use in your bread makes a difference in the quality of the final product. Bread flour is higher in protein content which gives the bread a unique texture. All purpose flour, which is usually easier to find, will also work just fine in most bread recipes. Whole grain and other types of flour add flavor, texture and color to breads, but must be combined with some measurement of all purpose flour in order to produce enough gluten to produce a successful loaf of delicious bread. Gluten is formed when water is added to flour. It forms a network of proteins that stretch through bread dough like a web, trapping air bubbles that form as the yeast ferments, thus creating the air holes that are characteristic of the perfect bread.

Kneading the bread dough is a process that is repeated until it is smooth, springy and elastic, and no longer sticky. Kneading generally takes about 5 to 10 minutes although dough made with bread flour usually requires more kneading than those made with all purpose flour. Once the dough is kneaded, place the dough in a large, greased bowl turning it over to allow all sides to be greased to insure that the dough does not dry out while it rises. Cover with a clean cloth and place in a warm spot until is doubles in bulk. Divide it into loaf pans that have been primed with cooking spray and bake.

These are the basic steps for making the perfect loaf of home-made bread. Be sure to follow your recipe carefully, as bread making is like building a house - you must get the foundation right before building the rest of the house, or it risks a fall!

Two Tasty Dishes You Can Prepare That Make the Most of Beef

Often we only think of poultry and pork when we want to cook cheap and nutritious meals, but if we are honest, we still crave the flavour that beef alone can offer.

Most of us lack imagination when thinking of ways to cook the beef, we mostly stick with the boring and well-known methods, meat loaf, hamburgers, meat balls, tacos and burritos.

Meat Loaf

But wait, have you ever thought of creating a salad featuring beef? There are a surprising number of wonderful recipes available that you can make with beef.

Here are two that have been created recently that your whole family are sure to savour.

Spring Beef Salad

You will need:
1 pound of ground beef
1 head of leaf green lettuce
1 head of red leaf lettuce
1/4 pound of fresh spinach
1-3 green onions
1-2 carrots
1-2 stalks of celery
1 tablespoon of fish oil
1/2 teaspoon of ginger
1/2 teaspoon soy sauce
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/4 cup rice wine vinegar
1/4 cup water
1 teaspoon parsely
1 teaspoon tarragon
1 teaspoon of reserved green onion

Directions: In a pan, brown your ground beef, while you are browning the beef add in, fish oil, ginger, soy sauce, garlic powder, salt and pepper.

In a large bowl, rip up your lettuce leaves and spinach. Chop up carrots and celery to your size liking. Then chop up the green onions into small pieces reserving 1 teaspoon for your dressing.

In a small bowl, mix together rice wine vinegar, water, tarragon, parsely and reserved green onion, set in the fridge to chill for approximately 15 minutes.

When the ground beef is done, drain off any fat that may have come out of the beef, now put into the bowl with your salad greens. Mix together. Take the dressing you created and pour all over the top of your salad, toss some more.

Your salad is ready to serve. This is a great spring or summer salad.

Beef vegetable soup with barley

This is a nice hearty soup that is great to eat any time. You could even set this up to cook in your slow cooker for the day.

You will need:
1 pound of ground beef
1 cup chopped carrots
1 cup chopped celery
1 cup chopped yellow onion
1 cup peas
1 cup corn
1 cup lima beans
1 cup chopped potatoes
1 1/2 cup barley
2 cups beef stock
4-6 cups water
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon basil
1 teaspoon oregano
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon black pepper

Directions:
In a large pan, begin by browning your ground beef, sprinkle a small amount of salt and pepper while meat is cooking. When the meat is browning, add in the onion, let cook for a minute or two, this will allow some of the oils to sweat from the onion and provide additional flavor to the beef and the soup. Now toss in remaining vegetables, allow to good mixing constantly for about 10 minutes, this will help the softening process on the vegetables and also release additional flavors for your soup. Add in the stock, water and spices, cover with a lid let cook on medium heat for about an hour, checking occasionally to make sure it doesn't boil over. Then lower to simmer for about 30-40 minutes. Your soup is ready to serve.

If you prefer not to use ground beef for these recipes you can used chopped up beef of your liking. Just remember to to brown the meat before any of the other steps.

Don't forget, there are a wide variety of different cuts of beef - also quality types of beef, like Aberdeen Angus - so if you are confused over which cuts of beef to use, ask your butcher, they are usually all to happy to offer you advice. You can find many delectable beef recipes by using the the internet - there are plenty of free recipe collections up there, almost all of them will have a collection of recipes for beef. If they don't have a specialist beef recipe section, you will probably find them in the meat recipes category.

Bon Appetit!

Ten Tips For Using Your Crockpot

Monday, January 24, 2011

In today's busy world, more and more people are using crockpots to prepare the families evening meal. I know some folks who have two crockpots. They use the large one to prepare meats or poultry and they use the small one to prepare side dishes and desserts.

There are many tips to make using your crockpot even easier:

1. Don't lift the lid to take a peak. I have read over and over that if you do lift the lid, you need to add 20 minutes cooking time.

2. Vegetables and potatoes take longer to cook in a crockpot. It's always suggested that you place potatoes and vegetables on the bottom, layering the meat and sauces on the top.

3. Regular milk can curdle in the crockpot due to long cooking times. Consider using either canned milk, or adding the milk during the last 30 minutes of cooking. Since you'll be lifting the lid, add a bit of cooking time to the recipe directions.

4. For recipes that call for ground beef, brown the meat before adding it to the crockpot. It will have a better texture. To confirm you discard all of the grease, pour the meat through a strainer first. Of course making a meat loaf would be the exception to this rule.

5. Trim as much fat off of meats and chicken as you can. Due to long cooking times, the fat melts right into the sauces and adds a bitter taste to the finished product. If cooking poultry remove the skin to avoid the melting fat.

6. Make sure to defrost all meats and poultry prior to putting them in the crockpot. Cooking times are based on defrosted meats.

7. Very little liquid boils away in a crockpot. You can thicken your sauce by removing the cover during the last 30 minutes of cooking. If you still find the sauce is too thin, pour the sauce into a sauce pan and add a bit of cornstarch.

8. Make sure your crockpot is filled at least half way. This prevents both undercooking and over cooking. Do not overfill the crockpot, remembering that very little liquid boils out.

9. Spray your crockpot with non stick cooking spray before adding the ingredients. This will help prevent sticking.

10. If you are using less expensive cuts of meat, consider cooking them in the crockpot as the longer cooking times help make even the toughest pull apart tender.

Enjoy the many recipes you can find for your crockpot. By following the above tips, your recipes should come out wonderfully.

A Chocolate Chip Cookie Secret You Want to Know

Sunday, January 23, 2011

Everybody wants to achieve perfection when baking chocolate chip cookies. It is the quintessential cookie. The cravings evoked at the mere mention of its name are powerful. Therefore, it is always so disappointing when they come out of the oven far less than perfect.

There are so many factors that come into play that affect the end baking result it is hard to know what went wrong. Ingredients, mixing process, and even the length of time the cookies were baked could thwart your best efforts and ruin your anticipated Utopian cookie. However, there is one simple little tip that could so drastically alter the results of your chocolate chip cookie, you will slap your forehead that you did not try it before. That is to chill your dough before baking the cookies. So simple and yet so important is this one overlooked step. We are always in such a rush to get to hot, gooey confectionery bliss that taking the time would be torture. But, a few hours in the fridge will promise that blissful moment to be even greater than imagined.

Chilling chocolate chip cookie dough does a couple of things. First, it marinates the flavors that go into a cookie dough. Have you ever noticed that lasagna tastes better the second day? Well, the same principle applies here but we are talking about cookie dough. The flavors will really pop and deliver a richer experience after sitting in the fridge for a bit. According to a New York Times article titled Perfection? Hint: It's Warm and Has a Secret (July 9, 2008), there are some interesting and yet dramatic physical effects on the cookie the longer it is chilled. They found that a thirty-six hour period in the refrigerator produced cookies with deeper shades of golden brown without longer time in the oven.

Second, the flour will really drink up all the moist ingredients that went into the dough after a prolonged time in the chill box. The longer the dough sits, the drier the dough gets, and that is actually a good thing. The chocolate chip cookie will have a better consistency right out of the oven. This is because of the hydration effect of sitting in the refrigerator and also because cold dough will spread less in a hot oven making a thicker cookie. And, don't worry about dry dough. The baked cookie will actually be moist and delicious.

There is one more factor to take into consideration when chilling the dough. Because the dough gets so dry during this time, it is best to form your cookies before you chill the dough. Try to scoop the dough after it has been thoroughly chilled and you will have a crumbly frustrating mess on your hands. Scooping them and chilling them on a cookie sheet is good. If you are going for the big chill and waiting the optimal thirty-six hours, an airtight container is best. You don't want those cookies to taste like last week's meat loaf.

Apparently Ruth Wakefield, inventor of the chocolate chip cookie, knew about this handy little tip from the very beginning. The New York Times also reveals that it was a regular practice of the Toll House Inn to chill their cookie dough. Somehow this piece of information failed to meet the final edit when the recipe went on the backs of Nestle's Chocolate in the 1930's. We should not feel too betrayed. Most great cooks are happy to share recipes, but rarely share all the tricks of the trade that make the end product great.

Let Them Eat French Fries

Saturday, January 22, 2011

Seems like the fat cats are on a mission to get fatter. The middle class is in decline, income disparity continues to grow, and now the dining section of the New York Times reports that, "Junk Food Is a Source of Comfort on Capitol Hill."

What we eat and drink is always very telling about ethos of society, pointing the way for marketers in the short and long-term.

It should come as no surprise that comfort is in. We crave it more than ever with the news getting worse every day. Any escape from dysfunctional leadership, the worldwide economic crisis, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, global warming and host of other serious problems is certainly welcome. The obesity epidemic? Who cares? How is the world a bad place when you're gorging on a big, warm, juicy cheeseburger and a side of crispy, deep-fried potatoes? Nothing like self-indulgence to forget your troubles.

At the close of the 1980's, an era marked by high fashion, luxury and indulgence, a trend emerged that I called, "It's so downscale it's upscale." Rolling Rock beer, what was once a regional workingman's brew became popular in upscale New York bars and restaurants at premium prices. The popularity of blue-collar heroes like Bruce Springsteen and John Mellencamp surged. Traditional comfort foods such as meat loaf and regional favorites like blackened redfish were ubiquitous in high-end eateries on the coasts. Oatmeal became the power breakfast of choice.

Of course, those are comfort foods as well, but there is a major distinction. People then were reacting to the superficiality and over-the-top lifestyles of the Reagan era, searching for authenticity. Now it seems, we just want to kill the pain.

The irony of elected officials and lobbyists in the corridors of power focused on short-term hedonism rather than long-range solutions might be troubling, but the message for marketers is crystal clear.

We have to give the people what they want. Ambiguity was never in, but it's really out for now. We might want our leaders to put aside petty differences, stop playing politics and act like grown-ups. But in reality, in our own lives, tough love and sacrifice are not in the cards. Pity the poor politician who says they are. Just cut my taxes and increase my benefits. If pigs in a blanket make me feel good in the moment, well, why not? I'll save the diet for another day.

That day will surely come, but for now, let them eat french fries. We are in dire need of comfort wherever we can find it.

Recipe For Meat Loaf - Presulta - Christmas Traditions to Start With Children

Friday, January 21, 2011

Most families serve traditional food that pertains to their heritage during holidays. I am Scandinavian so we serve Scandinavian fare. Scandinavians are known for their smorgasbords and that is what I remember most as a child. Christmas traditions, to start with children in mind, is ialways the best reason for making a fine meal that they will remember and carry on through generations. Presulta is a recipe for meat loaf in a way and I share it here below with you.

Christmas recipes and traditions for Germans have similar meals so this recipe could be considered for them as well I think.

I usually serve smorgasbords on Christmas eve, keeping it light for digestion and the following day. My Mother-in-Law serves a wonderful Scandinavian dinner on Christmas day. One of the thngs she prides herself in is "Presulta", a meat mixture, kind of a recipe for meat loaf. It is put into a wooden form and served with vinegar. Yup, It's true, vinegar.

The recipe for this meat loaf called Presulta has veal in it. Ahh me, I must confess that bothers me a lot! I have boycotted veal for forever. I just don't like the way they raise those little calves, ya know? I confess though that on Christmas day I do not refuse this holiday fare for which my Mother-in-Law works so hard to prepare. Can it be make without the veal and replaced it with regular beef? I don't know. I think it is worth a try and maybe someday I will.

"Presulta"

2 pounds Pork butt
2 pounds Veal Shank
2 pounds Veal

Seasonings:

1/2 TBls. peppercorns
3 large bay leaves
1/2 TBls. allspice
4 tsp. salt

Boil meat together in a large pot with the seasonings. Water should be enough to cover the meat. Bring to a boil and simmer for two hours or until tender. Let cool in liquid. Cut into one by one inch pieces. Leave some fat on the pork but not the veal. Line loaf pans with muslin which is large enough to completely cover top of meat once folded over. Divide meat and juice into the pans, (there should be enough juice to just cover the meat) cover the top with the muslin. Place heavy weight on top to press and compact this recipe for meat loaf called, Presulta.

This should be made several days before serving.

Know Where to Buy a Turkey Fryer and Make Holidays A Lot More Special

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, so you should start thinking about places where to buy a turkey fryer that will help you prepare sumptuous meals you can share with the rest of the family. Holidays and other special occasions are made more special when you have delicious meals prepared and served. Nothing can bring together a group of people who care about each other and create a jovial mood than a set of nice-looking and yummy meals. We all live in a very fast-paced world. Friends and family members all have jobs that keep them very busy for the most part of the year. You, too, can be so busy with work that you barely have time to make and enjoy a very nice home-cooked meal. And for someone who's used to eating fast food, a nice pot of hot stew or fresh-from-the-oven meat loaf.

Basically, it doesn't matter what the food is as long as it is home-made. The best tasting meals are the ones that are made right at home. Nothing can be better than that. This is why people make a great deal of holidays and other special occasions. They put out all the stops when it comes to the meal they serve; making sure that everything looks and tastes great. Holidays come only once a year. This means you will only have a rare chance to eat something that isn't take out or reheated in the microwave. Now how does a steaming plate of roasted turkey sounds for Thanksgiving dinner? It may be the one thing you have every year, but after several months of living off on take-outs and pizza, having a meal as special as this sounds like you're the winner of a reward feast on Survivor after starving for 20 or more days.

Meat Loaf

The secret to having a really sumptuous turkey for dinner is cooking it right. If you are crunched for time, you can simply buy fried turkey, but where's the fun in that? Preparing and cooking food is as fun as eating it. It also allows you to bond with friends and family who you're preparing the meals with. Another secret to having the grandest turkey meal is the right fryer to cook it in. For sure you have a turkey deep fryer somewhere in your kitchen cabinets that you haven't touched in months. Well, it's time to take it out.

In the event that you don't, then scour places where to buy a turkey fryer. There are lots of places you can get one. Popular shops like Walmart are really good places to get a turkey fryer. You will definitely have a lot of choices here-different brands and models. It should be easy to pick a fryer and bring home. But what if the one you've purchased turn out to be of poor quality? This could be disastrous for the meal you are going to prepare. Your food will taste bad. There's no fun in that. If you want to ensure your turkey is cooked to perfection and tastes really well, you should know where to buy a turkey fryer that is of high quality.

Grandmother's Wise Recipes For Success: Time Tested Wisdom For Directing Your Work and Personal Life

by Kal Edwards

Trafford Publishing (2006)

ISBN 1412080541

Reviewed by Debra Gaynor for Reader Views (8/06)

Grandmothers have wisdom to share with us that is time tested. Wisdom that has been learned the hard way. Kal Edwards was blessed with a Grandmother that shared her vast wisdom with him. We're blessed that he shares that wisdom with us.

Kal's grandmother taught him many things. She taught him not to waste things. He watched as she hemmed flour sacks. Flour sacks made good dishtowels. "Oh, we had no money for fancy things ... we just always used what was on hand." She also taught him to be prepared. One way is to keep your clothes pressed, organized, fresh and ready to wear." She showed him that the same could be applied to ones life, keep ones "skills current, take classes to broaden ones interests, and continually add to ones skills and talents."

Grandmother continued to share her wisdom teaching about listening more than talking. Some people are so interested in their own thought that they never hear what anyone else says. "People will always remember the person who shows interest by listening."

Much of the wisdom Grandmother passed on to Kal would have been called "common sense" by her. Unfortunately many people don't have "common sense". Grandmother took Kal into her kitchen and taught him as she cooked. She showed him how putting extra effort into things brought results. She taught him about being polite to others." A truly polite person is one that honors courtesy, conduct and character in any personal encounter."

What Grandmother wanted more than anything to teach Kal was to live life to its fullest. We can only do that when we care about others and when we truly know what we want out of life. Kal's grandmother is truly wise.

This book contains a "Personal Renewal Planner" at the end of each chapter. There are questions and a place to record your actions or answers. A good cookbook will have a few stains and notes in the margins from use. This book, like a cookbook, is intended for more than reading.

I picked up this book expecting recipes for apple pies, corn bread, and meat loaf. What I received instead was even more delicious. I received wisdom from someone who is very wise. I can picture Kal as a young boy sitting at his grandmother's table watching closely as she rolled out her piecrust, listening closely as she gave out bites of wisdom. I hope someday my grandchildren tell their children bites of wisdom from me. I would like to think they would say, "My grandmother taught me to be kind to others, to listen to what they are saying, to never stop learning and to enjoy life." This book has warmed my heart. The wisdom enclosed with such love can and should be applied to all aspects of our lives. I highly recommend this book for everyone. Apply this wisdom to your personal life and professional life.

2 Easy Meat Loaf Recipes for People Who Officially Can't Cook

Wednesday, January 19, 2011

Meat Loaves are surprisingly easy to make, so they should be the first choice for any husbands out there who absolutely fail in kitchen but want to try anyway. You can't really go wrong with them, to be honest. If you're heading to a Xmas pot luck party this year, and you're one of those guys who is inclined to bring chips, then you should either try one of these incredibly easy meat loaf recipes, or just not go this year. There is never a good excuse for bringing chips to a pot luck party.

Hamburger Meat Loaf Recipe:

- 2 lbs of minced pork meat
- 3.5 oz of cured ham
- 4 eggs
- Sherry (a dash of, not the whole bottle!)
- Breadcrumbs
- Pepper

Preparation:

Whisk the eggs first in a large bowl (don't worry, we need all of the egg not just the white or yolk - just crack them open and don't get any shell in there). Next, add all the other stuff. Mix it thoroughly WITH YOUR HANDS. Preheat the oven to 360 F (that's quite high, by the way). Dump the mixture into an oven proof long cake mould and bake for 40 minutes! Done. That wasn't so bad, now was it. The next one has a little more prep work but totally worth it. Are you ready for level 2?

Chicken Loaf:

- 1 lb of minced chicken breast (get this from the butcher, it's far too much effort to do it yourself)
- 7 oz of minced beef
- 1 egg
- 1 can of truffles
- 1 small can of pate
- 1 glass of cognac
- Ham
- Salt, pepper and butter

Preparation:

Mix together the various minced meats. Next, add in the egg, truffles, pate, and a dash of cognac (seriously, just a dash, this isn't supposed to be an alcoholic dish and there's a million more things we can make later that DO taste better with lots of cognac in them), as well as a little salt, pepper, and butter (not too much). Mix with your hands again, but don't worry about things being a little lumpy - texture is good in a meat loaf.

You'll need a cake mould again, and make sure you butter it before using it as this will really stick to the sides if you don't. Place a slice or two of ham at the bottom, then throw the rest of the mix in, finishing the top layer with another slice of ham.

Bung it into the oven and bake for 40 minutes at 360F.

Are you too a failed husband in the kitchen? Worry not, this simple recipe site has you covered for all the major food groups.

Fredericka "Marm" Mandelbaum - The Most Successful Fence in the History of New York City

Fredericka "Marm" Mandelbaum was born in 1818 in the country of Prussia. She immigrated to the United States in 1848 with her husbands Wolfe Mandelbaum. A big woman, tipping the scales at over 250 pounds, Mandelbaum opened a dry goods store at 79 Clinton Street, the corner of Rivington, on the ground floor of a three-story building that she later purchased with her ill-gotten gains. By 1854, the dry goods store was a front for the biggest fencing operation in the history of New York City. She lived on the top two floors of the building with her husband, son and two daughters, and their apartments were as lavishly furnished as any in the city, of course, with stolen goods. Among the famous crooks she dealt with were Shang Draper, George Leonidas Leslie, Banjo Pete Emerson, Mark Shinburn, Bill Mosher and Joe Douglas.

Mandelbaum was known for throwing lavish parties in her apartment, attended by every known criminal in the city, of both sexes, including judges and politicians she had in her back pocket. Knowing woman were as good, or even better crooks than men, she became good friends with female criminals like Black Lena Kleinschmidt, Big Mary, Ellen Clegg, Queen Liz, Little Annie, Old Mother Hubbard and the notorious pickpocket and shoplifter Sophie Lyons, who with her bank-robber husband Ned moved right over the Hudson River to New Jersey and became known as the Queen of Hackensack.

Meat Loaf

Mandelbaum first caught the eye of the police in 1862 and it is estimated that from 1862 to 1884, she handled between -10 million of stolen property. Her business was so good, she decided to put some of her best crooks on salaries, but abandoned that idea when she caught a few of them peddling their stolen goods to other fences. (What did she expect? Honest crooks?) She also decided to start a school for children on Grand Street, where the little tykes could learn the noble profession from the ground up, starting as pick-pockets and sneak thieves. For the older children, she offered courses in burglary, safe-breaking, blackmailing and confidence games. Her school became so well know, the son of a prominent police official applied for admittance, forcing Mandelbaum to shut down the school immediately.

Whenever Mandelbaum did get herself into trouble, she could always count on Little Abe Hummel and Big Bill Howe, from the law firm of Hummel and Howe (not to be confused with the law firm of Dewey, Screwem and Howe), to find whatever loophole they could find, legal and illegal, to keep Mandelbaum out of jail. Hubble and Howe were of such good service to Mandelbaum, she placed them on an annual retainer of 00.

In 1884, the New York District Attorney Peter B. Olney hired the Pinkerton Detective Agency to infiltrate Mandelbaum's crime organization. One of the detectives sold her a stolen shipment of silk, and when her house was raided the next day, she was arrested with her son Julius and clerk Herman Stroude. Mandelbaum was charged with grand larceny and receiving stolen goods. But the wily Hubble and Howe arranged for Mandelbaum to be released on bail. Resorting to form, she jumped bail and moved to Toronto, Canada, where she lived the rest of her life in comfort.

To add insult to injury, New York state got hoodwinked by Hubble and Howe and a crooked bondsman, who was supposed to have held the property Mandelbaum had pledged for bail. Using backdated checks, they transferred the property to Mandelbaum's daughter, along with other properties the state was in the process of putting liens on. Putting her finger in the eye of the New York City police, Mandelbaum, still wanted for her crimes. traveled several times to New York City, in disguise, to take up with her old pals, helping them plan several heists.

Having screwed the American government as much as any women in American history, Mandelbaum died of natural causes in Canada, in 1894, at the age of 76. Howe died peacefully in bed in 1903, but in 1905, Little Abe Hummel was sent to prison for several counts of legal malpractice.

To paraphrase Meat Loaf, one out of three ain't bad.

Cheap Snacks for People on the Go

Tuesday, January 18, 2011

Are you one of those people who don't have time to relish a good breakfast because you're in a rush? Love to have a good snack to munch on during office breaks but don't want to spend too much? Want to have fast and cheap food? Here are tips to help you make your own snacks fast and easy.

Fantastic Sandwiches

Meat Loaf

This one's a no-brainer, but some might think that this is the most boring snack anybody's ever going to bring in a brown bag. College students almost live on their sandwich maker, panini press, or even a griddler. Frugal ideas call for frugal measures! You should try it sometime!

Is this snack boring? I think not! There are a hundred kind of sandwiches you can make, and it can save a lot of money! These snacks often have repeating ingredients so you don't have to get groceries each and every time you think of a new kind of sandwich to make. There's the classic grilled cheese; also cheesesteak sandwich made of leftover steak, cheese and pepper; roast beef sandwich topped with cheddar for good measure; healthy veggie sandwiches comprising of cheese, tomatoes, mushroom, and sweet onions; the favorite pizza pocket bursting with gooey mozzarella, topped with pepperoni and drizzled with leftover pasta sauce. Pick a favorite or two, vary the kind of sandwiches you bring every three days and you have a fantastic snack to cut cost, and which you're never going to get bored of!

As Healthy As A Salad

Making a good garden salad doesn't take more than 3 minutes to make and you can enjoy a healthy and filling snack. Keep salad staples in your fridge all the time, as the ingredients usually are cheap and easy to find. Shred lettuce, slice up onions, carrots, tomatoes, peppers, celery or basically anything you want to include. Store in a cool, dry spot in your fridge. Take it to lunch in a ziploc bag or small container. Simply pour dressing or apple cider vinegar when you're ready to eat!

All Rice

White rice is soft and chewy while brown rice is dry and has a wonderful earthy aroma. Rice is very versatile and very cheap! There are also hundreds of ways you can fix yourself a great dish and more. There are office workers who eat rice almost every work week because rice can last up to 3 to 4 days with proper storage. Imagine having not to worry what you're going to cook and saving money along the way!

A rice cooker is basically all you need when you're cooking rice. When it's done, you can jazz it up with BBQ sauce while it's still warm, add leftover chicken, sprinkle with chopped spring onions and you're good to go. You can also pair rice with a can of Campbells chili for .50, or a can of Progresso Minestrone soup. With rice and any of your your favorite soup, you can even stretch the dish for two meals.

Living on Bread Alone

Huge fan of bread rejoice! Not only does bread fill you up in no time, it is inexpensive and can last for about 5 days tops even sitting on your counter. Use bread for a quick sandwich; toast it and slobber with jelly; make quick and great tasting French toasts with it using milk, egg yolk, cinnamon; or make garlic toasts that smell like heaven.

If you're a bread addict, you might have a lot of day-old bread lying around. Stretch your food dollar by making bread salad with just a little bit of onions, basil, carrots, tomatoes and bread sprinkled with vinaigrette. You can also moisten your bread and add it to your meat loaf to make a larger meal!

Nothing is cheaper than using something that you have lying around, right? Save money by brown bagging your lunch and snacks. This helps you stay away from both restaurants and office cafeteria, as well as the vending machine that sucks the money out of your pockets!

Throw an Election Party to Prepare for the Upcoming Midterms

Monday, January 17, 2011

November is fast approaching and that means a very important event is coming up - the midterm elections! Not everyone may be following the current political discourse, but it can't hurt to throw a festive party to celebrate politics and our nation.

Whether you're a Democrat or Republican there are plenty of decorations for either party and you will have no problem finding items to help make it the perfect shindig. Start by sending out some amazing party invitations that are covered in the American flag. It is your patriotic duty to celebrate out nations' colors on the perfect piece of stationary. The red, white and blue are symbolic of our freedom, and your party-goers will surely get excited once they see the amazing invitations.

Hang a large personalized banner, or two, in your home with your favorite candidate's name and campaign slogan emblazoned on it. You can make your venue feel like your very own campaign headquarters as you catch up on the election day tally and see if your man (or woman) is ahead in their race. Don't be afraid to hang red, white and blue donkeys or elephants as well, as the two animals represent out two major political parties in this country.

Of course, like you've done with your invitations, hang the American flag in as many places as possible around your home. You can never have too many flags flying in honor of election day. Stock up on balloons and streamers in the colors as well, and hang them in intricate patterns along the ceiling and walls to create a festive atmosphere.

It will most likely be a long evening while watching the election returns come in so it would be best to feed your guests. Try setting up a buffet style selection of American classics like hot dogs, hamburgers and meat loaf. For dessert set out some homemade apple pie and a variety of cookies like chocolate chip and sugar cookies with red, white and blue frosting. Since you'll be serving such delicious items make sure to have paper goods on hand so that your guests don't have to eat out of their hands. Paper plates, napkins, cups and party tableware in red, white and blue fit perfectly with the theme and help keep everything neat and organized.

The midterm elections take place November 2, so you have about a month to plan and execute the perfect election party. It is an exciting time in our current political climate, so what better way to celebrate than to gather your friends and have a lively, but civil, discussion regarding different political positions while relaxing and enjoying some great food and awesome company.
