Comfort Food - It's Not Just for People Anymore

Global radiation. Catastrophic earthquakes. Mid-century soothsayers predicting the end of the world. Movie theatres are full of doomsday scenarios. Even the Weather Channel feeds our eyes, minds and hearts negative and terrifying images of families staring at where their homes used to be and other images of never-ending destruction and disaster, recycling negative and traumatic events before our eyes over and over and over again.

When you and I feel anxious we may get some comfort food like a big bowl of soup, a piece of cake, some mac and cheese, or a nice big plate of meat loaf and mashed potatoes. One of my personal favorites is a steaming hot bowl of comfort called Malt-o-Meal. (This is not an article about nutrition.)

But what about your dog?

Your dog feels everything you feel. We don't really understand how they do it... it may be their sense of smell or another sense we don't know about. Dogs can smell death, can they smell anxiety? Or could it be their sense of hearing? Do they pick up signals in our breathing that could tell them our mood?

As humans we surely don't understand it fully. But when we feel unsettled, we go the fridge and fix ourselves a plate of comfort.

What is there for our best friends when they feel nervous?

Comfort food for dogs.

Now you can give your best friend some comfort food just for him. Maybe some Grammy Pot Pie for dogs, made with real chicken, whole barley, carrots, peas and parsley.

Or if your dog isn't in a pot pie mood, how 'bout a walk on the Cajun side with a healthy serving of Turducken? Turducken is a bayou classic but there's no reason why your dog can't enjoy it even if he's not creole. Made from yummy chicken, ground rice, oat meal, pearled barley, peas, apples, carrots, blueberries, cranberries and lots of other stuff, including amino acids.

Maybe your dog would prefer some Mediterranean comfort. There's a dog food called Mediterranean Banquet made with lamb and lamb broth, brown rice, chick peas, spinach, apples and olives.

For serious comfort there's Thanksgiving Dinner... for your dog. Yes, we're talking about major comfort, a canned dog food called Thanksgiving Dinner, made, of course, with turkey, turkey broth, turkey liver, fresh sweet potatoes, carrots, green beans and Granny Smith apples.

Great comfort foods for dogs.

With dog food choices like this there's no reason why your dog should have to go one minute without his own comfort food. In fact, what're you doing Friday night? Why not sit down for an hour or two of disaster TV and TWO delicious plates of turkey dinner, one for you, and one for your best friend.
